And BKS, being a Mod was all about riding a moped and wearing a completely new fashion every week.
You want to know what a Mod is listen to Quadraphania. Mods were however sort of the original hippies. . All us hippies called the Who our own. They invented heavy rock. All their stuff was protest and drug related. They were the more militant arm of the hippie movement. Wont get fooled again is a real classic as is my generation just to name a few. Theres nobody other than the Beatles that I indentified with more back then. The who only were mods for a while . That was in the early 60s. When the hippie movement started they were right there.

I love Quadrophenia, Gawain. In the thanks it says (paraphrasing since I don't have it in front of me) "None of the characters in the story are supposed to represent our lives, especially not the parents. Our Mums and Dads are all lovely people who live in bungalows we've bought for them in the Orkney Islands."

Yes, Quadrophenia is a brilliant album. The image it evokes-eating a pie in some grotty chippy on the Brighton seafront-is one of the most powerful I get from any music. Plus, the tunes are some of the best they ever wrote-Love, reign O'er me being the stand out track, I think, with the thunderous bass of the up tempo The Real Me coming a close second.

I always thought that Quadrophenia was more of a send-up of moddism, though, to be honest-making fun of how ridiculous sticking thousands of wing mirrors on your scooter and wearing a perfectly tailored suit just to feel a part of something bigger than yourself was. There are a couple of references to some of their mod period songs, if you listen.

It's Outer Hebrides, by the way-although I did cheat and look at the album booklet

Gawain, I know that they were sort of accepted into the hippie label, but Pete himself never liked them. He hated Woodstock, and I'm pretty sure he never really got the whole thing.
Not saying I don't like them, they're quite good, though I can't agree with some of Pete's views. He hates Led Zeppelin, which loses him point automatically.

No way. The Who are the original and Zep the imitator. They even got their name from the Who. Zep is more comericial. THe Who are far more talented. I mean the Kinks are better than zep also. Led Zepplin is greatly overrated and they put on the worst live concert by a major band I ever wittnesed personally. Believe it or not most of my generation didnt like them. Well we liked them but didnt think they were anything special. In fact I like them better now than back in the day.

Also actually the first heavy rock band was Blue Cheer then the Who.

I will take a look at Blue Cheer- thanks for the inadvertant advice.

Well, there may be a few more posts, but it looks like the Doors will win. Also, I now know that 3 people hate me.

No way. The Who are the original and Zep the imitator.
How has Zep imitated The Who? Zep came out of the Yardbirds where Page overshadowed Beck and the others and they quit. Some of the later Who stuff such as Behind Blue Eyes was very Zep like though. Im not sayin, im just sayin..

They even got their name from the Who.
That is sort of funny. Moon and Townshend were jealous from the start and Moon said Zep would go down like a lead balloon. Turns out Zep was far more successful than The Who, something Townshend has never gotten over.

    Zep is more comericial.
Thats why Atlantic Records fought them tooth and nail for the few singles they ever released? Thats why they followed the extremely successful II with the far more artistic III? Thats why when they formed SwanSong they never released singles? Only very recently has Zep sold out, think of how early the Who got whored out.. I heard their music on commercials in the 80s.

THe Who are far more talented.
In what ways? Musically Zep far exceeded them in every format. Commercially theres no comparison. The Who had a few good songs and a lot of OK, while Zep had several albums full of classics.

I mean the Kinks are better than zep also.
    Now you're just being contrarian.

Led Zepplin is greatly overrated and they put on the worst live concert by a major band I ever wittnesed personally.
Thats all subjective. Ive heard of how amazing they were in concert and heard and seen it myself.

Believe it or not most of my generation didnt like them.
Thats why the sold better than any other rock band besides the Beatles? You are right though, they went beyond the hippie, political type music. They made music that stands the test of time, as their popularity today indicates. Jimmy Page specifically didnt want to do the social statement thing that the Who was big into because he wanted the music to transend a specific era.

In any event, its all subjective.. but the numbers are on Zeps side, especially compared to the Who.. i mean, most of their Greatest Hits CD is filler. LZs Greatest hits has 2 CDs worth of great music. That says a lot.

Frankly, I don't really like Zeppelin much; their music strikes me as being mundane. I really think that Creedence Clearwater and Pink Floyd did much better at the rock genre (even if they were at opposite polls.) Then again, I also really like Iron Butterfly, so I am not obviously not voicing any sort of mainstream opinion here.

CCR all sounds the same, I cant stand them anymore. But Floyd was definately good.

How has Zep imitated The Who? Zep came out of the Yardbirds where Page overshadowed Beck and the others and they quit.
Nope . First was Clapton who quit because they were to comercial. Then came Beck. When he quit they reformed the band as Zepplin and Page joined.

Only very recently has Zep sold out, think of how early the Who got whored out.. I heard their music on commercials in the 80s.
Thats nort whats meant by commercial music.

In what ways? Musically Zep far exceeded them in every format. Commercially theres no comparison. The Who had a few good songs and a lot of OK, while Zep had several albums full of classics.
No way. How many rock operas do they have? And I see you now admit commercially theres no comparison. The Who had a few good songs? Are you kidding me? The whole album Whos next is incredible. Niot to mention Tommy and Quadraphania. Their writting skill blows Zep away. Heck most of their stuff is covers .Ill take Cream over Zep anyday. In fact Zep dont even make my top 10.

Only Zeps first 5 albums were really good. It was down hill from there.
    Now you're just being contrarian.
Again musicaly and lyricly they blow Zepplin Away.

ILl tell you what for every good Zep song you can name I can name a Who or Kinks song I like better. These are the two real pioneers of this type of music.

PS have you ever heard Live at Leeds?

Ok I see what the disagreement is about. We just have different tastes. I cannot stand rock operas, just cant stand them. Im more of an AC/DC fan over a Queen fan, for example.

But as far as musical progression goes, Zep had plenty of that. They didnt do rock operas, but they did do tremendous songs such as Kashmir. They incorporated many more forms of music in their work than the Who did, or the Kinks. You can find traditional celtic, deep southern blues, african, indian and many other influences in their music that are perfectly infused.

Id say each artist in Zep was a far better musician than most of the rockers out there. They were rockers, but they didnt let that genre box them in. They didnt follow a specific format that gained them success earlier.

As far as what they are best known for - hard rock - they are the greatest. The Who didnt do too much hard rock in comparison, and it just cant compare the the long list of great rock songs Zep has done. Thats why they are known as the grandfathers of hard rock.

And yea ive seen Live at Leeds, its awesome. Im not saying the Who are bad (I like a lot of their stuff), just that Zep outdid them. Have you heard How The West Was Won?

The Who invented Hard Rock! Along with Deep Purple, I'd say. I see Led Zep as more of a blues rock band than a hard rock one: and although Led Zep produced a larger volume of good material than The Who, I would say that The Who were the more influential band-they pioneered concept albums and the use of synths, among other things. The musicianship question isn't cut and dried either-Entwhistle was a better bass player than Jones, I'd say, although Jimmy was a better lead guitarist.

Just to throw something contoversial into the mix as well-The Who didn't steal a lot of their best known tunes...

    I love both bands, though.

Which songs do you think they stole? I know there were some arguments after the breakup of the Yardbirds and Beck threw a fit about how much better Zep did some of that music than he did, but Page had just as much right to it as Beck.

Perhaps stole is a bit too strong. They took a fairly large amount of material from old blues artists, though.

Several people voted here who didn't know, or hadn't heard, one of the two albums. I think that, for future reference, you should really listen to both groups before passing judgement in a poll. Not criticism, just advice.

Most of them .Start with the album Live at Leeds.

"The Who were at the time the loudest band in the world. They had just conquered America, played at Woodstock and Tommy was being hailed as a work of genius. And what did they do? Arrived at Leeds Uni and recorded what I reckon to be the best live album ever."
