    Battle of the Bulge?

I cant stand that film. M48's in greywash as panzers, M41's for Shermans... ugh. They started filming that thing in Belgium or somewhere then started to run out of funds and had to relocate filming to SPAIN as it was cheaper!!!! so halfway through you go from snowbound ardennes to mediterranean landscape. Throw in Telly Savalas and the asshatery is complete.

    Gods and Generals was excellent.
So was Apocalypse Now, and Saving Private Ryan.
But the best would be Master and Commander. Not my favorite period, but I'm not crazy about the movies of my favorite period.

    In no particular order:

    Apocalypse Now
    Platoon
    Lawrence of Arabia
    Gallipoli
Breaker Morant (if you haven't seen this, drop what you're doing and go rent it - now!)
    Das Boot
    The Dogs of War
    The Great Escape
    The Big Red One
A Midnight Clear (another must see that most haven't)
    The Longest Day
    Hotel Rwanda
Le Roi de Ceour (great funny and tragic movie set in WWI)
    Stalag 17
    The Deer Hunter
    Glory
    Henry V (Branagh's version)
    The Killing Fields
The Battleship Potemkin (probably the best propaganda film ever made)
    Schindler's List

There's one the title of which I can't remember, but it's about these two soldiers stuck together during the Balkans War, a Serbian and a Croatian. Wonderful movie.

Oh, and a movie with Peter O' Toole as a murderous German general in WWII. Night of the Generals I think is the name of it?

Ok, crap. Now I can't stop! More are coming to me. I may spend all weekend in the video store looking for these.

The Bofors Gun with Nicol Williamson versus David Warner.

    "Band of Brothers" for quality.
"Full Metal Jacket" for the dialogue... PRIVATE PYLE!
    "Gallipoli" for pathos.
"Zulu" for the Zulus ("Zulu Dawn" also had Zulus, but not as good).

Oh, and they're really more adventure than war movies, but check out:

"The Wind and the Lion" (1975) for Sean Connery, a great Arab/German battle at the end, and Teddy Roosevelt.

"Ogniem i mieczem/With Fire & Sword" (1999) A Polish historical adventure movie with great Early Modern battle scenes, lots of swordplay, and a great siege. Hard to find, but everybody here would probably like it.

    Best "historical" war movies:

(Band of Brothers if it were a movie)
    Zulu
    A bridge too far
Das Boot (probably fictional, but feels so authentic)
    Black Hawk Down

    Best "story" war movies:

    Platoon
    Apocalypse Now
    Three Kings
