My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

I may be wrong, but I believe they were short, I don't believe they were fatter, or thinner than other people although some of them may have become fat because of their hedonistic/sedentary lifestyle.

From what I remember of the rather depressing plaster forms they created by filling holes in the hardened volcanic ash at Pompei, most of the adults were on the short side - around 5 feet in height. None of them seemed particularly overweight. Touring Pompei on my own, after ditching the tour group when I was in Naples in the Navy in 1979, was one of the most rewarding trips I've ever taken. I have a great picture of the mosaic tile "welcome mat" in front of the entrance of one villa with the words "cave canem" clearly visible. Perhaps one of the world's first "beware of the dog" signs.

Nonsense. That was 1900+ years ago. The average height of humans has increased since then. Most of the people I met in Naples when I was there were all pretty much the same height as me with some variation just like anywhere else. My mother is only 5'2" and yet I'm right at 6 feet. Don't worry about it.

Roman build is usually used to refer to someone who is short and thick. Thick does not necesarily mean fat or out of shape either.

Stocky is a good way to describe that... You know a short compact person. In general Inuits and other artic peoples are built like that (for comparison).
