Protectorate means they give up their sovereignty and become part of your political unit though remain moderately independant. They can't attack you and there is some money transfer going on but I'm not sure from whome to whom because I don't yet have RTW. Aswell, they only will become protectorate if you could severly kick their ***es. You need a large threatening force near them and outnumber them province count wise I think. You must overpower them so much it is almost a redudant gesture but it is more humane than burying them.

Becoming a Protectorate is basically 'owning' that faction. Its a one sided alliance that is pretty much over rated in this game. It does act at times as a pretty stabel alliance but its very hard to get (hardest in the game) and can only be done with the nation u offer it to have basically nothing left for its own, being all but conquered. U get a perk to march tru their lands but again they dont have much. By the time u can make them submit to this form of an alliance it would almost be easier to just crush them.
*Bows. Turns to return to darkness...bumps head...looks around, pretends noone saw. Dissapears in shadows while cursing at self*

not actually 100% true. once, as the brutii, i got thrace as a protectorate and they had about 10 provinces and enough troups to fill at least 5 full stacks.

    Exploit:
On first turn after reload, get protectorate more easy.
It is famous bug, should be fix in BI and patch to come at about same time.

I now never exploit this, but still get some times protectorates.
But some peoples give rather their life than freedom.

Only ever had a protectorate twice. (Gaul as Julii, and Scipii as Greek cities). Its so hard to get, its pointless.

More to do with luck, tbh.

I use the exploit once in a while if there is a faction that I don't feel like fighting at the moment.
The best thing about the exploit is that protectorate last longer then the normal one(except if you happen to be a true enemy of the romans then it will not last long).
And by then you should be ready for them.
