The bloody trouble is we are only alive when we’re half dead trying to get a paragraph right. - Paul Scott
Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it.
- Sir Winston Churchill
"The facts of history cannot be purely objective, since they become facts of history only in virtue of the significance attached to them by the historian." E.H. Carr
"If Hitler invaded Hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons."
Winston Churchill, after the German invasion of the Soviet Union (June 1941)
"If you are going through hell, keep going." - Churchill
"The biggest argument against democracy is a five minute discussion with the average voter." - Churchill (again)
If you're looking for quotes, Wikiquote is a good place to look.
"Look I’ve got my old pledge card a bit battered and crumpled we said we’d provide more turches churches teachers and we have I can remember when people used to say the Japanese are better than us the Germans are better than us the French are better than us well it’s great to be able to say we’re better than them I think Mr Kennedy well we all congratulate on his baby and the Tories are you remembering what I’m remembering boom and bust negative equity remember Mr Howard I mean are you thinking what I’m thinking I’m remembering it’s all a bit wonky isn’t it?"
-Wise words from John Prescott
And Churchill's always a safe bet when looking for quotes.
"The facts of history cannot be purely objective, since they become facts of history only in virtue of the significance attached to them by the historian." E.H. Carr
Here's one of my all time favorites:
"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets." - Voltaire
I don't know how it goes or who said it, but something along these lines:
"We'll do everything that's possible right away. What's impossible will take longer."
I'd really like to know who said it and how it really was.
Under construction...
"In countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Norway, there is no separation of church and state." - HoreTore
"The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer."Originally Posted by LegioXXXUlpiaVictrix
My first thought was that this was a motto of the US Navy Seebees (construction/engineers). An internet search yields a variety sources. The Seebees was the most common designated source of the quote, but others attributed it to the US Marines, US Air Force and one site listed it as an arabian proverb. I'm still inclined to go with it being a Seebee motto. There is always the possibility it was borrowed from an earlier source though, but the shoddiness of the internet search results leaves me wondering what would be an authoritative source.
