Runaway Slave Spearmen?

Is that like - 'Run away! It's the Slave Spearmen!' Or 'We're only Slave Spearmen... Run Away!'?

I sense it's the latter... I don't expect them to put up much of a fight if peasants look down on them...

On a related tangent (if that's possible?) - the new BI Ironman rules are taking shape already - conquer the world as Hun Runaway Slave Spearmen...

Yeah, the Runaway Spearmen sorta stands out. Other than that though, the unit list looks very good.

Somebody previewed the game for a website and said they were hard to play, since they start out as a horde and such.

P.S. Does anybody think IGN is going to give this game less than a 9.0 review after all the hype they've given it?

As someone mentioned earlier, it's a night Monty Python reference. I wish they'd put that in the game when a unit routs: "Run away! Run away!"

Runaway Slave Spearmen.........Lars537 has explained this unit and I can see nothing so terribly wrong with them. A runaway slave had to find sanctuary somewhere and if that was in the ranks of his masters enemies I would not expect him to be elevated to any lofty heights. A common spearman 'that peasants look down upon' seems ok to me, let's not forget that so called peasants made up large contingents of armies. Unlike the MP lobby, not all armies were made up of elite units

Steppe Swordsmen........An all encompassing title given to units from conquered peoples, just like Steppe Spearmen. Though Horse Archer armies were the predominant armies of the Huns, they soon realised that campaigning in Europe was not the same as the open steppes. Even before Attila the Huns were using infantry. I suppose they could be called 'Subjugated Gepid Swordsmen' or other such name but Steppe Swordsmen will do IMO.

Nobody has mentioned the Chosen Warriors or Herdsmen. All in all I think CA have done a good job in presenting a few new elements to the game ( and I realise that most of the comments have been made in jest ) and some not quite accurate titles I can more than live with because if we get really picky, were there any Hunnic Elite or Heavy Cav or Lancers as units?

Amen to that. While it's a jest, it's possible that the desire for great units worsens the economic problems many players have.

Getting top-of-the-line units requires upgrades to top-of-the-line military buildings. Balancing an economy and going for great units is a tough act, frankly. Waiting for great units also makes for a long game, and all of RTW's economic problems compound with time.

Imagine what the initial Horde army consist of. Run-Aways and Horde Archers... It is going to be hard to capture anything good.

Surely not? I imagine the Huns are probably going to be like the Mongols in MTW are start off with a formiddable cadre at the beginning.

And to keep play balance, I suspect most horde armies are going to have to be like that.

I suspect BI will be more of a set-piece "good to go" kind of contest, with large starting armies and less emphasis on building and the tech tree. Maybe a little like the MI expansion?

But it will be interesting to see how CA pull this off, as building up is such a central feature of most TW campaigns.

The horde armies will consist of horde units (horde spears and horde chosen swordsmen) plus a miz of regular Hun units.
