Default Upgrading units, for example Equites upgraded to Roman Cavalry

Can existing units be upgraded, once a technical level has been reached? Or, are we stuck with what we have and have to build entirely new units? For example, if I have Equites (from Stables), can those Equites be transformed into Roman Cavalry by visiting the city or town that has Cavalry Stables, and getting retrained or something?

Not a chance, you cannot retrain premarian units into thier eqivaliliant of post-marian units. So your only choice is to keep them garrisoned against rebels or use them on the frontline.

What I've always done was as soon as I get post marian units, I use them to garrison and send out the premarius units to conquer.

Your avatar is a default one for new members, and an ugly one at that. However, you can change it in usercp option, around the upper left corner of the page. The more you post, the more avatars you get to choose from. And really hard to earn ones are pretty cool. Though R:TW, especially Barbarian ones, are being currently overused. You should, as I may humbly suggest, adopt an M:TW avatar instead.

    Otherwise, welcome to the org.

Yeah, its best to pool of your pre-marius units into several armies - clear out all of your cities of every pre-marius unit you have (except for triarii). Now use these pre-marius armies to assault your next settlements. Gradually they'll be wore down until you have to consider disbanding them due to low troop numbers (or you could merge the same unit together to re-strengthen a unit). But this is exactly the point - you can't train them anymore, so hastati, princepes, velites, roman archers, equites etc are of no use to you.
