Default Please recommend books about Rome

I've been reading Colleen McCullough's First Man of Rome series and the story about Gaius Marius through his newphew Gaius Julius Caesar is the best. I also tried The Last King : Rome's Greatest Enemy, about Mithridates' war with Rome, nice book but not great.

Any books can you guys recommend? I'm looking for something that's about the years in the coming Barbarian Invasion expansion (410 AD?). So I could enjoy both the game and the book.

    Thanks.

Well if you want an historical account, there's not much better than "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Gibbon. It may be 200 years old, but it is one of the best accounts available, although it may take a while to read as it is in about six or so volumes.

I saw a book in a bookshop called "The Fall of the Roman Empire", looks prety good, although I have not read it.

caspian, check out the "Books on Rome" section of the Books on Medieval Europe and Rome thread in the Monastery. The Rome section is a nice long scroll down the first post.

Not the right era, but still a good book: "The battle that stopped Rome" by Peter S. Welles. A good book about the battle in Teutoburger forrest.

If you want to REALLY get into the old Roman hero Caesar, get his Gallic Wars.

I have yet to read it but I hear that it is not really a classic, but a great historical piece even if it is somewhat propogated.
