P.S.: I am still trying to understand why Americans think they must have guns and Europeans just don't care.

The only case I recall is that my wife has been pickpocketed (can that actually be used as a verb?) at the Cologne train station when we traveled to Utrecht.
Even among relatives and friends a hardly remember any cases of falling victim to crimes (my older brother almost got beaten up by some gang when he lived in Berlin, but he managed to run away).
never been a victim of a crime personally.....and I live in the capital of my country and not in some backwards country town were such things are even more rare.
my mom almost got pickpocketed once....but she realized what was about to happen and just walked away from the guy.
a couple of friends of mine were robbed walking to school a couple of times(but this was more of a bully type situation than an actuall street crime)

UK - suffered from burglary/car theft five times in ten years or so.
The most memorable time, the burglar smashed a house front window and grabbed a laptop in the middle of the night. An hour later, when the hullabaloo had died down, I was nodding off back to sleep and I heard him coming back for the power cord! In retropsect, it might be as well that I, being in the UK, was not allowed to have a gun. If I had been armed, curses might not have been the only thing I fired off at him as he fled (empty-handed this time). There's something rather scarey about the "flight or fight" response.
More generally, I am coming round to US views on gun control, but - as they say in Spiderman - with great power, comes great responsibility.
Wow - that's pretty cheeky...Originally Posted by Simon Appleton

I was robbed last week by my brand car shop.
There was a noise in my engine and I negotiated a fair price to do the job that an expert mechanic had deduced just from the sound of it.
When I came to pick up my car they had added a 1700 NoK cost to additional parts etc. that was absolutely necessary for the engine to run safely.
Needless to say I was not willing to pay this bill right there and then.
It seems I will need a lawyer to help me get the originally price, but that will cost more than 1700 Nok, so I am basically screwed and will have to pay the new price…

That precise thing happened to me two weeks ago, Sigurd.
They said the rear differential on my car needed to be replaced for 14K USD. When they did that, they then said the problem still persisted and the front differential would have to be done for about 18K. Needless to say, I was a bit enraged.
In the US you can call AAA (if the shop is a member, which I think most are over here) and have them arbitrate the dispute. They ended up giving me the car back with the rear dif done for free. I was expecting the problem to still be there like the mechanic said, but lo and behold the car was completely fine. I guess they figured I'd be stupid enough to just let them go ahead and replace the front differential without me even coming down to check the car out first.
This worked out pretty well since I basically got the car fixed for free. (I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. The wheels will probably fall off later today since I'm here talking about my good luck.)
Anyway, good luck. Just another reason to move to a city with good public transit for me.

Seriously, I've been 'asked rather unpolitely' 10 francs when I was 10 (the people asking were girls, but they were like twice my size, so I gave them the money)
Someone tried to rob my cellular phone and all my money last year, but after some negociation, he left with only 10 euros.
A friend of mine has been 'blackmailed' (I think that's how you say it) by two 12 year old gipsies. They wanted a cigarette, and since he refused to give them one, they started to hit him.
The worst thing I ever saw was when a group of 12-14 years old jerks started to yell things like 'I'm gonna f*** that b***' in my bus, cause there was a nice girl sitting here. It was disgusting, and as usual, none ever bothered to kick these jerks' bottoms.
Nothing really serious of course, but I read stories of people being killed by a gun owner from times to times in the news.

The state kept me locked in for 9 years, saying I had a "right" to be locked in like that, but I didn't feel about it that way because if I had refused they would have brought me to school violently. I don't know why they locked me in, I've never raped, murdered or stolen anything. Rapists get around 6 years (4 if they're nice to the prison guards) and murderers get around 12 (8 if they're nice to the prison guards). I got 9 years for being of the wrong age, no reduction of the sentence despite nice manners to the guards.
Once they had locked me in, they also exposed me to pshycological torture, threatened me and told me that if I didn't work hard enough in the school they had locked me up in, I'd never survive as an adult, that I'd end up on the street and die a most painful death.
I think that is to be considered the worst crime I've ever been exposed to.

Good story. Glad to see you coming over to the "right" sie of gun control. Though I would have to note that the USA is a occasionally too haphazard about the responsibility side.Originally Posted by Simon Appleton

Dang. If I saw that, I'd kick their pathetic butts (providing they are 12-14 years old.)The worst thing I ever saw was when a group of 12-14 years old jerks started to yell things like 'I'm gonna f*** that b***' in my bus, cause there was a nice girl sitting here. As for me...my brother got beat up on a school bus once after making fun of this other kid. But that's about it.

Been burgled while we slept years ago - only a cheap rental video taken, nothing else. Had my motorbike stolen.
Neither were a big deal and a gun wouldn't have prevented either or been worth killing someone for.

Lets see - back in 1983 someone stole my car stero out of my car. It was kind of funny since the stero was broken anyway and I was about to replace it.
My House has been robbed twice. I believe once by my step-son's so called friends and most likely he was involved - since no windows were broken. But that was back when he was already in trouble with the local authority for minor stupidity on his part.
And once it was broken into - but nothing taken since it happened after 30 days after the 1st Robbery and all the good stuff had not been replaced yet. I laughed about that one.
Lucky for me my weapons were at my father's house - so no firearms were stolen.
By the way there is something to be said for letting your childern learn from their mistakes. After being sentenced to about 1 year in the local jail for behaviors similiar to breaking into homes - my stepson has since decided its better not to break the law - and get a real job. Got him cleaned up and working for a friend of mine - at a somewhat decent wage for the Dallas Area - 9.00 USD plus up to a 500 dollar bonus if they get all their orders out on time at each a certain sales level.

Canada 4-5 years ago. Got burgled twice. Both times in our garage. Now the garage in my house is not just a place for cars but is also has an apartment over it. Which we used as a rec room. So they (they were acuatences of my brother and I) looted the bottom part of the garage they went over it and took my stereo and game consoles and so on. We were alseep both times. But it's probably best we never caught then, as my dad probably would have beat them to death right them and there with his bare hands. My dad you see has been a carpenter/construction worker for the last 35 years, and has a temper (well we all do). Who needs a gun when you have bigs fists and air nailer and a crow bar.

Burgled in Scotland: I got some of my more expensive stuff back when the police found it in the possession of somebody they busted for other offenses.
Mugged in Leeds, except, eh, I won and they buggered off so it was more an attempted mugging.
That's all I can think of off-hand.
My car got vandalised in Wales but I had left it lying in a car park for about a year so people just figured it was abandoned. I reckon some drunk idiots decided to smash up a deserted car for a laugh.
Someone nicked the clocks off my motorbike once. What was worse was they didn't unplug the wires, they just cut through them (which was actually harder to do and required forward plannning or at least some pliers). Which was really annoying as it meant a fair bit of the wiring loom had to be replaced too.
And someone tried to pick my pocket on Oxford Street, but they weren't very good at it and ran away empty handed.
That's it. Mind you it would be a different story if I was 14 again no doubt.

My family was robbed, quite blatantly, by firemen. Firemen! Unbelievable.
My father was in ill health, and there was a small fire in his den. 911 was called, dad evacuated to the hallway of the apartment building, and five firemen showed up in good order. They put out the fire and left. When we re-inspected the apartment, two of our most valuable family heirlooms were gone: A handwritten letter from George Washington to an ancestor of ours who did some Coloneling in the Revolutionary War, and a $1 bill printed with the name and likeness of another ancestor who lied and cheated until he got control of a bank in the 1800s. (The Feds didn't print money back then -- each bank did its own. So if you were vain enough, you could print bills with your face on them.)
Neither can be replaced. We scanned Ebay for months after hoping to see them up for sale. Dad was unwilling to confront the firehouse, for reasons that passeth understanding.
That's the worst crime in recent memory.
Two times in my life I had the disagreeable experience of being assaulted, the first time as approximately 16 years ago, I was waiting for the bus and two guys with guns stole from me all my capital of "australes" 5 (like u$s 0,000000000005).
The second time was approximately three years ago, I had a shop and a guy begun to steal me with a semiautomatic gun proceeding to put it in my head and to demand the money, which I reacted in a worst possible way, me resisted, I insulted him and threatened him with the fists, in the end he went away without one cent. When I calmed down and took conscience of the events, the terror and the paranoia took possession of me.
I believe that if in this moment I should have a gun, I would be dead and would be another gun in the streets.
returning to the shadows.....
Now that is just about the worst type of Crime - I really would of hoped that Firemen would of been above such petty behavior when doing their public service.Originally Posted by Lemurmania

Somebody stole my laptop out of my car, sitting in the driveway. Somebody tried to open our sliding glass door at 3:30 AM but ran back out of the yard through our fence when I turned the flood lights on. I got hit by a drunk on my bicycle one time and they drove off. Oh, I live in the dark shadows of Mordor.

In light of that, I'm just fine with the idea of my wife being armed when I'm in China for a 2 week business trip.
I don't know what to tell you guys.... I'm very envious that things like rape, home invasions and murder are unheard of in Europe. Bully on you. But sadly, the United States is mired in a world where these crimes still exist. Maybe you all are right. Maybe if we outlawed guns, all crime in America would cease. I seriously doubt it, and I'm not willing to trust my wife's life & safety to it.

I lived outside of a town of 9,000 people, in the country. I never walked the streets at night (but it probably wasn't dangerous anyway). So, as far as I can say, no one ever faced a situation that needed a gun ? No one had to use a gun to 'protect his freedom' (^^) ?
