No. It is just another way of putting the "execution" command when crushing a rebellion.

You only ransom your enemies when they are belonging to a faction, not the rebels. Mind you, if you don't kill rebel prisoners before the battle ends, their lands will be confiscated, which brings you money without returning the soldiers to the enemy. So it is better to leave them alive: pressing the kill button will cost you money.
