Westwood is dead. EA murdered them. they can't make any more games since they're dead

if they were still alive, they should make another Dune game. in my view Westwood's last RTS before EA murdered them, Emperor: Battle for Dune , was the best RTS game of all-time. albeit highly unfinished and buggy due to EA rushing it out the door and then not allowing for sufficient patching

acually if you botherd to look at the credits at C&C generals it includes westwood so there not DEAD they are ALIVE and there also a rumor that there making a new game......very likely theres alot of westwood fans (such as me) who West Wood wouldnt want to upset....also the true gene of RTS gaming would be false, but thank god for blizzard thus making there be some sainty in the world of RTS gaming and there not gonna get bank rupted easy....so west wood is still ALIVE

i love Westwood same as you, but you are incorrect when you say that they are alive. EA murdered them long ago. Westwood has not existed since shortly after C&C Renegade came out.

EA bought out Westwood because they were a money losing interest. CnC RTS games were there only successful franchise, everything else they made flopped big time. So eventually EA had to protect there investment in Westwood by buying it. After EA bought Westwood most of the Westwood empolyees were sent to the EALA development studio, which turned out Generals it's x-pack and the BFME games (which technically are CnC fantasy). But something like 75% of the old Westwood team is now at Petroglyph studio's. Both the people who didn't move to EALA and from former WW people who left EALA after being worked to death by EA. So the next CnC games will be Battle For Middle Earth 2 and Star Wars empire at war, they are being made by the same people who made CnC after all. But potentially the next CnC titles game will be Red Alert 3, if EA takes it out of limbo.

Also blizzard couldn't make a good RTS game if they were shown by Sid Meyers himself.

    "cough" Starcraft "cough"

But yeah you're right, the taste differs quite much. Never really liked the C&C series myself.

We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

Is there a word game about abbreviation RTS here, or I'll be the first sucker saying "Hey! It's Real Time Strategy, man!".. I've just been..Ahem..

That's true Dune is the first RTS. However, it's still a widely accepted truth that Starcraft is the king of the RTS region.

Well, I did not mention my own thoughts about RTS preference. If they'd ask TW battles and AOE series crash them all. Warcraft III is a very pretty game, but I like the RPG elements much more and I think RPG taste is slightly over RTS elements in W3.

However, I generally keep updated with game mags and the editors say that Starcraft is the king of RTS in an objective sense.

Good story with horrid game play attached to it. Same story with all Blizzard RTS games. Great story lines horrible out dated un-fun gameplay.

To you, it may be "Real Time Strategy", but to anyone who's sick and tired of the genre, "Resource Transit System" is the real definition. The whole game genre are dependant on one thing: resources you "mine" from the surrounding area. Gold, crystals, tiberium, cash, spice... it's all the same.

    Build worker.
    Send worker to mine resource.
Wait for worker to come back to your main building with resource.
    Build more workers.
    Send workers to mine resources.
    Rinse and repeat.
Build hordes of A) super strong units, or B) super weak but super cheap units.
    Zerg rush the enemy.
    Rinse and repeat.

Thankfully, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms made the resources, and how it's "mined" to be quite unique.

I vote other. I really liked the Emperor: Battle for Dune game, even if it's just because I like the Dune universe. Damn EA for ruining it out of greed. It's far from polished, though, and ridden with bugs, thanks to EA's lack of support.

Though I'd like a Dune game in another genre, though. It'll be awesome. Fighting from planet to planet (though not a space empire genre, since the Dune universe rarely engages in space battles, considering the Guild's monopoly on space travel. In fact, wouldn't it be intriguing if you have to pay the money directly to move your troops from different planets, with increasing cost for increasing size? Adding a whole new strategic depth, stopping the blitz/rush and force the players to use smaller forces rather than just rush the horde across the universe. You gotta read the novel to understand) or just on Arrakis itself with the Great Houses, add a Paradox-complexity level, or even the lighter KOH style diplomacy/intrigues into it, and set up recruiting systems similar to R:TW. There you go. Oh, and battle it out the old ways, ala Rise of Nations "fighting" mode.

You had it with planet-to-planet battles. Imagine having to fight Major and Minor houses- an incredible variety of soldiers, not to mention mercenaries... oh, man... and in the end, you have to face Shaddam's Sardukar!

By the way, I do not find Starcraft to have horrible gameplay- in fact, I still play it from time to time, whereas I stopped playing C&C long ago. Starcraft (and the Brood War expansion) is probably my favorite RTS of all time.

Yup. The legendary Sardaukar; even I love them. In Emperor: Battle for Dune I sometimes (in SP campaign) use entire armies of them alone to sweep clean everything from the map. Nothing but a giant worm ("Old man of the desert") could stop them. The massed infantry firepower and the anti-tank/aircraft lasers annihilate even the smaller worms quickly enough before any real harm was done. Though the Fremen are greatly underpowered from the novel, which they beats even Sardaukar head on. Paul Atreides was supposed to launch a Jihad across the universe with them, in fact, had he not achieved the status of the next emperor through blackmail before that.

Oh, and I just thought a Bene Gesserit "hero" unit in an "inside the building/cave/whatever small space which you can't build a base on" mission to use and fight against would be extremely fun.

Actually, I think that he still had to unleash his Jihad- in the second and third books, I keep seeing references to a great galactic war. Might be wrong. Who is a Dune expert around here? I haven't read the books in a few years.

Edit: In "Emperor", I was actually able to use the Fremen to cut down enemy infantry pretty effectively- they were more guerrila fighters, as they were before organising under Muad'Dib. What puzzles me, though, is that the Feydakin were not that good. You are right about them- they should have been capable of taking on the Elite Sardukar.

Fedaykin in Emperor were the very best single unit in that whole game. one of them, properly used, could entirely ruin an opponent's economy and/or army. and that was just one use of them. they were also the most diverse anti-vehicle infantry in that game.

if you wanna kill Elite Sards then just use Fremen Warriors. used propely, the Fremen Warriors can kill any type of other infantry in the game

so you see, Fremen are all around total ownage in that game, you just have to pick the right type of Fremen for the job at hand

What about Total Annihilation ? It basically had the same system, but less boring, and with 2 resources (energy and iron). TA:K was just a step backward compared to TA. Btw, I can't wait for the next TA-like game, Supreme Commander. It was presented during the E3 show, and it looked like it would trample to death any RTS standing on its way, stupid Westwood games included.

I believe the first game to be considered an RTS is Herzog Zwei released for the Genesis in 1990.

To me RTS, like adventure games, is pretty much a dead genre...I think Westwood should try to make a strategy game that's as original as possible so I voted other.

If Westwood hadn't been taken in by the Borg, then i would want them to remake C&C. That game just kicked ass, and would kick even more ass in full 3D.

In my opinion, TA sucks. And besides, I'd much rather have a fantasy setting than a futuristic one.

They should make a decent game, that would be a nice change...

I loved the original CnC and Red Alert, but all the others did very little for me. Then again, I'm one of the few people on the planet who doesn't like the AoE series.
