well, to me humor isnt a little yellow (or often blue or green even) dot that represents something remotely similar to human emotions.

The problem with asynchronous technology based communication is that it lacks the interpersonal cues we rely on to decipher the total message. Facial expression, gestures, body language: All are absent. Emoticons help to bridge that gap and present a fuller meaning to the user's text.
Examples:
I am joking, this is fun, that was funny, I agree with you and think that we are having fun.
I am angry, that makes me angry
thank you, I am making my statement with humility
Frustration, lack of control
I am ignoring you, I do not think this is important
