Everyone who speaks with Chirac speaks French, so I'm wondering. Wether French is still the diplomatic language or Chirac is just too lazy/idiot to speak another language. Anyway, if he's as skilled in English as our last prime minister was, he surely should speak French

Bush speaks Bubba English and apparently Spanish--although when I asked a fellow engineer (and Bush supporter) about Dubya's Spanish in 1999 or early 2000 the response I got was, "Oh Lord, he butchers my language." I replied that Bush did the same for mine.

Would be interesting to see a list of purported languages by president. Most are going to be college graduates that have taken some foreign language classes.

Yeah, I was just being an ass. I'm fairly sure he speaks english. Yet, almost everytime he meets an European leader, both would speak french.

Jefferson spoke French, Latin and Greek, and if memory serves German as well as English. He wrote his version of the Bible in the first three plus English.

Ah let 'em play. They always do this. It rarely turns to gunslinging and fisticuffs. I would hardly qualify this as "an insult fest".

    Chirac is fluent in English.

He learned it at Harvard and in New Orleans, where in the 1950's he wrote his thesis about the development of the port of New Orléans, pointing out, yes, the dangers of a possible flooding.

    He speaks Russian too.

And no, chances of hearing him speak either in public are pretty slim. A president of France is adressed in French, and conducts diplomacy in French. It is part of that whole 'the world needs to adapt to us, not the other way round' crap.
