I urge you to acquire the Viking Invasion expansion as soon as you're able--it greatly improves the game on all levels. Medieval is still a terrific game by itself, however; you're in for loads of fun either way! Just make sure to download the 1.1 patch for Medieval (if you haven't already), as it fixes a number of bugs and balancing issues. Happy conquering!
