Default Cheney now wants to be President

Saw that three times now, in USNews, Times, NYer, and Newsweek - er. make that four times. Plus, heard it on FoxabusetheNews. Is it possible? I mean really, is the GOP so out of touch - is he - that they believe they can put the anti-Christ up for president and with their anti-liberal-democrat advertising they can elect Cheney? Cheney even believes it - he has yet to deny (recently) that he won't run (he should run - to Switzerlamd before his corruption trials begin).

Personally, I think its a diversion. The GOP has no candidate they like - McCain could be a shoo in (but, he is his own man - the bastard), but he won't deny peoples rights (the commy f'), or admit that women should never have been given the right to vote. Dumb 'nam vet - spent to much time in a cage with those rats, snakes and spiders (known as food to him; at that time).

Yeah, I like the choice of Cheney. Actually, I love it! It means Al Gore could be elected .... ooops, actually he was - thank god for the supreme court. Well, it does mean the GOP loses.

Ergo, I surmise that Cheney will die before the end of this presidency - heartattack (you know). And, that whom so ever becomes the new VP will be the next candidate.

Jeb is out. To much baggage he could never conceal in a national election, that he has in a states. Winning the Governorship of Florida? No big deal, when one considers that Floridas' corruption (today) makes Louisianas look like it was perpetrated by Texans - oh, wait a minute ... same thing.

If he get's the nomination he will most certainly lose to hilary. Can you imagine, those two are like complete opposites of eachother.

Wow, a Hillary/Cheney match-up. That might be enough to make 90% of the voters stay home. It will be the very first Presidential election in which only PETA and the Christian Coalition participate.

This is political posturing. They threaten with Cheney, who appears extremely far-right and has a public image problem. Then they put up a few real candidates who appear "moderate" in comparison.

    Good stuff.

I vote for powell. That guy rocks. I think he would be the first black president. He needs to run with someone else as the veep. When it was his turn, it would be uncontestable. That would be a 24 year run of GOP presidency.

Probably posturing. On the Rep side, there will be nothing more than a few tentative trial balloons sent up until after the results of the Nov '06 elections are known -- have to know the landscape before you plan the assault.

This will NOT stop the media from speculating or printing any and all rumors -- after all they have a lot of column/blog inches to fill and politics is actually pretty quiet right now with Brownie ousted and people focusing on Rita. It'll take a day or three for the blame game to get rolling again in earnest. The next big fireworks display will be for the new SCOTUS nomination.

    Could Cheny win?

Yes, but he has a few obstacles. Too many heart attacks (the US electorate likes the President to be more or less healthy). A pretty high "negatives" score (the Haliburton stuff does bother some of the moderates as well as the dedicated opposition groups). His "appeal" is too cerebral for some (too soft-spoken, not particularly photogenic, average public speaker -- though at least he mangles English less than the boss ). Is he actively corrupt? I think not, but he is tarred with the "out of govt. straight into cushy govt. consulting job" brush -- lots of US voters of all stripes hate that stuff even if it isn't illegal, because it appears to be unethical on a bunch of levels.

Cheney's biggest advantage: so far, the Democrat Party shows little or no sign of being coordinated on anything but a "we hate those nasty fascists" level. They have yet to articulate a positive message/program for doing better than the Republicans, do have the rep for being weak on defense (though this may be unfair, the label has stuck) and the "The U.S. is always wrong and a bunch of evil imperialists" tone of many of the hardcore democrat supporter groups does NOT appeal to the moderate 40% in the middle.

Had the Democrats been able to articulate what appeared to be an effective program for improving things that "sold" with the American political middle, they could have won either of the last two elections.

The "weak on defense" label was not shrugged off by Kerry despite valiant personal military service and that may well have been the edge in Ohio and a few other swing states in 2004.

In 2000, the Democrats should have won, but Ralph Nader managed to siphon off critical left-wing votes that should have gone against the Reps and for the Dems. The Supreme Court did not elect George Bush, it was the thousands of Floridian lefties who went to the polls and voted for Nader in a state they KNEW was pivotal -- and which George Dubya carried by fewer than 800 votes. How a "green" voter could knowingly pull the lever for Nader when they knew the risk would be Dubya besting Gore is beyond me. The only time I ever voted for a 3rd party type was in an election where I was annoyed at the Republican in question but in a state that I knew he would carry anyway -- why would you risk a bad result in a close race?

And, to those of you who persist in the "supreme court election" fantasy:

to argue that the Supreme Courts decision at the time was incorrect is to argue for delaying election results in order to allow a PARTIAL recount of selected counties picked by a partisan plaintiff in order to advantage their candidate. Which, by the way, subsequent recounts later showed would not have changed the results. Or is the "dig" simply too juicy to resist despite its innacuracy? Oh well.....

Bottom line: Cheney might, but it'd be a bit of an uphill fight.

The American presidential options are only slightly better than the EU ones.

We get absolutely no choice (go democracy!), whilst you get to choose between Cheney and Clinton. At least we can blame our politicians...

They can not let reality creep into their idea why Gore lost the election. Its just got to be someone's fault besides the way the vote got spilt by Nadar.

Bush had more votes than Gore in Florida. All major papers confirmed this. According to the concept of elections, Bush had more (i.e. a higher sum of) votes than Gore (i.e less people voted for Gore, despite the best efforts of democrat poll workers to count every vote for Gore), and thus won the state.

Ergo, I surmise that Cheney will die before the end of this presidency - heartattack (you know). And, that whom so ever becomes the new VP will be the next candidate.

Be fair, just because he thinks Cheney to be a crook doesn't mean he views Clinton as honest. I am reasonably certain that we could find a few folks who view all four: Clinton, Gore, Bush, and Cheney as scoundrels without going outside the roster of this .org.

Call me sexist, but I don't even like women in the military. As much as I like Condi, I don't like the idea of some chick on her back at night and making policy decisions in the morning.

Sorry, but women belong in the kitchen or with kids, not in the oval office, in a combat zone, or in positions of power. I don't believe in Taliban policies, but this is a man's world and women are in it. There is no shame in it and women are not "inferior" or second-class citizens. I just believe in different roles for the sexes. Call me old-fashioned.

And my darling wife mostly agrees with me. I love that girl.

Count me in the disagreement camp, Mr. old-fashioned. I have seen nothing that makes me believe women are any more or less competent then men as leaders. As combat troops, I suspect most lack the upper body strength for some roles. If anyone can cut the mustard physically for the combat role in question, that's fair enough by me.

I might respect that position if you even had one shred of logic to support it. Why don't you like the idea of women in power? Anything reasonable? Or just bigotry?

It is called a vagina. And I am not joking.

As Jack Nicholson's as Good as it Gets character once said on writing women: "I think of a man, and take away reason and accountability".

If you have ever had a mother, or dated, or worked with women, then you would know how totally true this is. Women do not have the stability and presence of mind and emotion.

On the other hand, women are vastly better at roles men would be incompetent at. Like being a mother. Or being hot.

Its only the ugly ones with no estrogen that demand power. These same miserabley depressed humans try to make life terrible for the avergae woman. Since when was being a homemaker looked down upon? Since bra-burning dyke feminists, that's when! Homemakers have a HELL of a job.

You all would do well to encourage and support women who choose to stay home, raise children, and support the family.

Notice when divorce rates started climbing? When women started being "working moms" or careerists.

The role of women is in SUPPORT. And any military man will tell you that without support, the front lines will crumble, wither, and fail. In that way, women are our equals. Just in a different way.

If Cheney is the GOP nominee then the Dems will win in a big way. Cheney is corrupt, but that is not necessarily a show stopper. His health is a big problem, and would be a big drag, but it is not necessarily a show stopper. The show stopper is that few people seem to like Cheney or find him a sympathetic character. You can get around a lot of things, but if the majority of people just don't like you, then you are going to have trouble becoming president. Cheney's "go f*** yourself" comment (a quote), was one of those defining moments in public perception of him. It was funny hearing it thrown back at him during his Katrina tour in Mississippi. Another problem is that being an oil man is going to be a big negative in the near/mid future--the credibility issues are probably insurmountable.

Condi? Doesn't seem viable. She's been a sock puppet for failed Iraq policies. I don't see how she can shake that. The Iraq war has become unpopular with the majority of the U.S. public, so until considerable time has passed, I don't think she would have a chance.
    Rome Total War, it's not a game, it's a do-it-yourself project.

What? And beating them would help the divorce rate?
