CA bashing

It may be en vogue, but it gets a little tiresome at times. We wouldn't be modding this game if we didn't feel that improvements can be made, but we have a wonderful platform with which to mod, and while arguments can be made about various things, the fact is that if you didn't like the game at all you wouldn't be here.

So please, don't use this forum as an aggregation point of CA bashing; EB certainly do not fault CA for making a game with mass-market appeal, and I for one am getting a little bit tired of all the anti-CA comments.

Yeah, I can't say I haven't bashed CA myself before when I was modding and wishing that they had lived up to their pre-release promises of making an easily moddable game.

But overall, I think that CA has done a decent job with this game. I mean, after all, they have to make a game that sells. And ultimately there are more players looking for pure historically tangent fun than there are those looking for a thoroughly detailed game with pinpoint historical accuracy.

I mean they do make those types of games, though of course they're turn based and hardly as exciting as the TW series.

It's gonna get a whole lot worse real soon.... some guy in sweden has got BI and been posting screenshots. saxons only have 9 units.... thats right, 9, and that includes peasants (or their equivalent, not sure wat their name is). don't know how many the rest of the factions hav, but even the romans are pretty thin... hopefully everybody won't use the EB forum to talk about the shortcomings of BI.

The total war series by CA is certainly unique and a positive addition to the world of things that allow human beings to waste their time killing pixels. CA bashing is not good but constructive critism is always worthwhile, but Priests come on that’s like going out with a mullet hairstyle.

yes i admit i have openly participated in CA bashing and i am getting entirely sick of it. especially wen it is not constructive in any way. knowing me when everyone gets going about BI i will probly join in as well, though, so i shouldn't really condemn it now.

OK, RTW wasn't EXACTLY what we hoped it would be, but let's step back and compare it to the other games that were being released a year ago.

Most of them are a pile of dump in comparison to RTW.

I'v get frustrated with CA all the time, but I guess they must get frustrated with us too. They probably deserve more praise for what they did do and less criticism for what they didnt.

greek fire is right. i bought this game and loved it. i must hav played it nonstop for about 6 months. of course i noted the faults (crappy a.i and barbarians factions mainly), but to me that did not make it a bad piece of work. RTW was and still is a great game. but i DO think that if they claim to sell a historical product they should put more work into the history side of things. priests are just ridiculous. gotta love thos king arthur knights as well lol.

I agree with the sentiment that despite its historical shortcommings RTW is a very fun game.

True they did appeal to the mass-market and that caused the EB Project to be born, originally in an attempt to give feedback and ideas to the Devs and later into the full-blown mod concept it is today.

Regardless of the Egyptians in their funny hats and invisible armour, and the Barbarians Hurling Heads in front of their screetching women, I have spent a lot of time playing it.

Who knows maybe we will have a "Europa Barbarorum 2 The Fall of Rome" mod... Only time will tell.

i completely agree. I am mainly on the .COM and it seems that all people do is whine about the game and how bugs have made it un-playable etc. I find it very irritating. IF you hate the game then why are you going on the forums?

well, i think there's a difference...
i for one have participated, and soemtimes even started, and thread "against" CA..
but imo, there are degree's

I've never said i didn't like the game, and never said i hated CA (or at least..i didn't mean to..)
it's mostly a "GAH" towards their units...if you see the miracles that are created by volunteers like PROM, or Hoggy, CA's modders invented the game, and they were getting paid for it!..

and i think that's what most people who are 'bashing' CA feel...not angry, not hating..but more a "why didn't they do it.." type of feeling..

There are some serious gameplay issues in RTW v1.2 that no mod can solve. If CA doesn't solve them, they will remain in the game sabotaging the massive effort that has gone into mods such as EB.

I think Greek_fire19 is right: we are being too critical of CA as their game is a good one and I have spent many pleasurable hours playing it. But I expected so much more...

That, and the fact they seem to go for a Hollywood-interpretation of history makes me somewhat unreasonable.

Because it can be better. Not saying that bashing CA is good in in of it self, but it is good and right to point out historical mistakes, question their desicions, etc. But making fun for the point of making fun is pointless.

But this is EB, talk about the upcoming games in the RTW forum. We've already got a Graal knight thread over there.

I cant say i hate CA and feel the need to bash RTW but i cant say im totally satisfied. To be honest RTW was way out of it league when it was announced. I remember first time i saw screenshots i freaked out. It was the most close to reality strategy game i ever saw. The ai may not be perfect but its not unplayable as some people complain. In fact if you play it in hardest and be little careless you can actually lose big time. Yes i agree i would like more diversity in ai strategy and not the usual head on charges but think what was going on with other games.

What i cannot though understand with CA and the staff there is basicly some aesthetic issues. I mean they can say that doing this or that with ai wasnt possible but how difficult is to open few books and see few illustrations. Its crazy to me few fans to be able to make much better and realistic looking units that the copmany that produces the game. And im not talking for big things. For example CA couldnt have her models be like Ferres romans? Or the barbarians looking more diverse?

I understand that they aim to the big picture but even by that criteria how do you explain the imaginary red spartan robes, when most of the public demand (falsely) a classical looking one? Isnt that strange?

Its just one speculation im making but i think that for some reason the game came out earlier than it should. I feel that those people did all that mistakes due to time pressure cause they certainly had some form of history research. Otherwise everything would be a mess. I think they wrapped up everything quickly and stopped halfways. That explains to me the so many empty unit slots.

Well I know video games have often suffered from rush released. Like KOTOR 2 was awesome, but the ending was rushed due to wanting to get it out for the Holidays.

Not to argue anything, but just keep in mind CA has minimum requirments to cater to- their models have less polygons and textures are less detailed than many modders' because they have to be if people with lower end systems want to run it.

CA may have some flaws, but that comes from the business machine. It's just the way it is. If money was not involved, than you would have bad-arse game. Oh wait. You will.

well (this is just to clarify, im NOT bashing anything or anyone, commenting on <insert immflammatory topic here> or calling your mom a hoe :D) most peoples complaints stem from CA's lack of accuracy and some fairly major gameplay flaws in the game. RTW graphically is very good (though many EB units are far sexier).
