When an army loses its goal of defending their homeland and becomes a bunch of thugs then this is the kind of people that it attracts...

Actually you will see this or similar behaviour from a couple of individuals in any army of the world - especially if this army is away from home and family (you will also see in in peace keeping forces).

Hmm ... actually, let's say you will see this kind of behaviour not only in armies - you just have these kind of sickos in society and consequently they also show up in the army.
Bad? Sure it is. Will these guys face consequences? Very likely I would say.
