...you're playing as the Romans, you've got lots of great armies rampaging across Europe, and then suddenly that git Marius comes along and makes them all redundant. It's a pain in the butt. In my Brutii campaign, my two very expensive pre-marian armies that were campaigning against a very strong Thrace, are now redundant, because if i go into battle and suffer losses, i can't retrain them. I now have to make even more expensive Marian armies, which will take a while to do.

You don't have that problem when you stick to the peasants throughout.

Drat! I blitzed through my only full-length Roman campaign (Brutii) and never saw the reforms. I should try it again as Julii so I'm not in such a rush to crush Egypt.

Why would you need to build whole new armies? Just keep using them as normal and instead of retraining them, merge the units and replace lost ones with the new equivalent. You can also use the partial units/depleted armies as fodder/frontier garrisons. You don't have to go replacing all your units.

Actually I'm quite happy when I reach this stage, for it means better quality troops. That's not as if you could go bankrupt with the Romans. As Murmandamus suggested, merge units and use them as garrison.

Yes, instead of the problem of hideously expensive replacements, you've got thousands upon thousands of people who are nothing more than cannon fodder.

Incredibly enjoyable cannon fodder as well.
