That's because you're supposed to water it down. And when I say water it down, I MEAN water it down. It should be about 1 part ozu and 15-20 parts water. No exaggeration. Also, keep stirring it, or at the bottom of the glass (or whatever it is in), it becomes undrinkable. If you mix it right, it should have a mild licorice flavor, and it should actually be slightly sweet. It's really good.

But, yes- it is still beat by hard liquors- that is, flavored hard liquors (i.e. spiced vodka, tequila, scotch, Irish whiskey- my favorite- etc.) I regard unflavored hard liquors, like vodka and white lightning, as being undrinkable. I just can't enjoy any alcoholic drink that doesn't taste good. Just ruins the whole buzz.

Speaking of which, are jaegermiser and ozu counted in the same category? I know they have similar characteristics- both have a very strong licorice flavor, both take a loooong time to take effect- but ozu is one of the Medditerranean drinks, whereas jaegermiser is decidedly German.
