Couldn't you do this way back in STW?

I considered going pagan as WRE, but figured I'd have to put a pagan heir on the throne to do it??!!![]()
Nope - no sig what so ever.
I thought if the official religion of a settlement was pagan you could only build pagan shrines and it needed to be converted to christian if you wished to build christian shrines. But apparently not so, since you can indeed build whatever shrine you want.
So my question remains, does conversion to another faith unlock a part of the techtree?
Maybe you can only build priests after you go christian?
In any case it is a very small "unlock" and rather unimportant.

When you build a christian chruch (3rd christian temple) you can build a hermitage which makes people happy (5%) and you can train priests/monks. This can be upgraded to provide more happiness and gives the priests experience upgrades.
Yes, but that has nothing to do with conversion. From the start pagan factions are able to build both christian and pagan shrines, it has nothing to do with conversion. For example start with the pagan Alemanni. Destroy the pagan shrine and then you have the option to either start a pagan or christian temple.

When you build the christian temple you convert the offical religion of the city to christainisty. Then when you build a church it opens up a new part of the tech tree.
Therefore conversion opens up a new part of the tech tree.
It doesn't
Or at least not what I had hoped for. I thought that it was similar to the Vikings in VI converting to christianity when their regions had enough christian believers. This allowed the Vikings to build churches (right?).
In BI you can do whatever you want, build the christian part of the techtree in one region and the pagan part in the other. The official religion of the faction leader or the settlement has no effect on what can be build. It only affects unrest and that is a missed opportunity IMO.
Ah from memory yes, buy building a portugese trading post. That allowed you to build the gunpowder units, but not the monks - the dutch post however allowed you to keep both from memory.Originally Posted by Catiline
So yes it was in there, but not as dramatic.
