It is pretty straight forward. Each settlement has an official religion. The percentage of the population that is of a different religion to the offical one acts as a penalty to public order.

The official religion is determined in this order.

    1. If a shrine is built for a particular religion that is then the official religion.
    2. If there is no shrine then the governor's religion is the official religion.
    3. If the is no shrine and no governor then the faction leader's religion is the official religion.

Additionally if the governor and/or the faction leader's religion differs from the settlement's official religion you get additional penalties to public order...

Thus if you have a 90% pagan community and suddenly knock down their shrine and build a christian one, well you can see what will happen...

Is the official religion of the faction the faction leaders' religion? That's all I need to know.

Yes I believe so, in fact I don't think the manual even mentions an official faction religion, but simply makes use of the faction leader's religion...

Oh, ok. Final question: With barbarian factions, how often do you actually get Christian generals? So far, i've only had Pagans, but I'm only 3 turns in, and I get the CTD before every battle.

Do an error check on your hard drive that RTW is on it might cure the CTD's. Now a generals religion is handled by the game like a trait. Ok a generals religion is a trait, he probably matures with it based on the temple in the city he comes of age in. so to get a christian general you need to put him in a city with a christian temple and he may convert after a while. Or if he comes of age in a christian city with a christian father, you see where I'm going.

For the religion trait, I had a quick look through the traits and triggers file last night.

The three religion trait only have one level and they do not have a no going back level set so in theory you should be able to move from one religion to another, but the only trigger I could find that effected the specific religion of a character where in the creation triggers (e.g. Birth, Adoption and Marrage triggers)...

Which means that there does not appear to be a way of changing a characters religion once it has been set...

Yep religion of characters is determined by the religion of the settlement he matures in. And candidates for marriages seem to nearly alwasy be the same religion as you faction leader.
