Default Any way to keep RTW1.2 when installing BI?

Just got my copy of BI, but don't dare to install it untill I'm sure that I can keep playing RTW in the 1.2 version, so that I won't have to worry about compatability with EB. Does anyone know if simply making a copy of the RTW folder and renaming it back to it's orginal name to switch to 1.2 would work?

Try making a back-up of your entire RTW directory and place it on e.g. your desktop.

Just copy the whole RTW folder to somewhere else and it will work fine. You can have several copies of RTW on your pc with no problems at all.

I'd suggest renaming the main game folder to Rome_v12 or something like that and making a new desktop shortcut for it, and then reinstalling RTW v1.0. That will give you a clean RTW install over which to install BI.

Renaming your copy of RTW and placing it somewhere completely different is a safety measure. BI has an auto installer and has been known to become 'confused' when two copies reside in the same place ( even if one is renamed ) I only had one install of RTW so no problems but the auto installer caused problems in one case that I am aware of. No idea why they chose this method, IMO manual intervention is far safer and more certain. Good luck

Anybody successfully got both 1.2 and 1.3/BI sucessfully installed and running on the same PC? If its a relatively easy option I might have to buy BI. I just don't want to kill my 1.2 campaign yet.

I copied the entire RTW main folder, then I installed BI (upgrades the game to v1.3).

I renamed the 1.3 game folder as "Rome - Total War [BI]" and changed the 1.2 (the copy) folder back to "Rome - Total War". The game started up fine with the original Rome CD, and I was able to fight a quick battle. Didn't get around to testing if the campaign works but I think it should be fine.

Now switching between 1.2 and 1.3/BI should be just a matter of renaming the main folders - the folder named "Rome - Total War" being the one that's used by the game.

You don't have to rename anything to switch between RTW v1.2, RTW v1.3 and BI v1.4.

Cool. Can you try a 1.2 save game for us? If it works I'll be getting me a copy of BI pretty soon!

Yeah, I recently cleaned out some of my multiple copies of RTW. Here is what the folder looks like now:

Those are all copies of RTW actually. All you have to do (like they said above) is make a copy of the entire folder, then just rename it to something else descriptive. No big deal.

Not to be a no-good, dirty thread-hijacker, but....

I have RTW patched to 1.2. When BI came out, I bought it and installed it. I haven't gone back to RTW yet. My question is:

Is 1.3 now "installed" because I have BI? Say I want to go back and play a Julii campaign -- will I be playing 1.2 or 1.3? How would I *get* 1.3 if I don't "automatically" get it with BI? And what does 1.3 do, anyway?

    Thanks for any answers!

Brace yourself for some very bad news.

You will not be allowed to reload your old R:TW campaign. At least that's what happened to me.

You might -- might -- be able to find the savegame file. I don't know. Haven't looked. If you do, you might be able to move it to another file, reload 1.2 somehow, then put it into that version's savegame file.

    Sorry.

Hmm.... Well I'm not really interested in loading up an old savegame from 1.2. I was just wondering if I would be able to play RTW at all now that I have BI...

When you say "You will not be allowed to reload your old RTW campaign", do you mean "campaign" as in "particular savegame", or do you mean "campaign" as in "the entire game"?

Yes, you can play R:TW, but it will be 1.3. You cannot load a particular 1.2 savegame. You can start a new campaign game, but it will be a 1.3 campaign.

Sorry for keeping on going off-topic, but I just want to add something concerning the playability of 1.2 campaigns.
Before installing BI I just made a copy of my RTW folder, and renamed it. Then BI installed over the "default" RTW folder, and now I can play RTW 1.3, BI and RTW 1.2. Must admit that I haven't tried to play RTW1.3 yet, but I want to wrap up my 1.2 campaigns first.
So maybe that can be a solution for you too? Keep the 1.2 savegames (back-up), reinstall RTW 1.2, make a copy of this folder, and then install BI.
I hope it'll work for you too.

EDIT: Oops, I should've read this thread before posting. Appearantly this has been suggested already... Sorry for the redundant post.
