    Default nazi forest swastika

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/1053635.stm

Foresters in the German state of Brandenburg have removed a massive swastika from the landscape. The swastika was believed to have been planted to celebrate wartime leader Adolf Hitler's birthday in the 1930s and its existence had been all but forgotten until German reunification.

    Around 25 trees were felled

The massive Nazi symbol, about 20 metres square in size, could only be seen from the air in the autumn weeks when the larch trees turn yellowish brown and stand out against the evergreen forest.

the only pic i could find of it is from this weird parody site, so excuse the music and stuff. i only found out about the forest by searching the ytmnd sites and seeing it there, first.

the article is 5 years old btw, but i'm posting it because it's weird that it only came to light 70 years after the fact. it has a time-travel quality since it took until the trees matured to realize something was up.

Hmm, Nazi-named furniture too I see?

Surely "Hermann" should have been a wardrobe rather than a sofa?

On a similar but more light hearted theme, a gang of criminals on community service were instructed to plant flower beds with spring flowering bulbs in Rotherham. The probation service only realised this was unwise when the daffoldils came up 4 months letter, spelling out "BOLLOCKS" in large letters...

ROTHERHAM, England, April 7 (Agence France Presse)
A gang of thieves who were ordered to plant daffodil bulbs as part of their community service have seen their revenge flourish this spring. The group were told to plant hundreds of bulbs along one of the main roads in Rotherham, in northern England, last autumn but, when the bulbs sprouted this week, the blooms spelled out the words "Bollocks" and "Shag" in letters four feet (1.3 meters) wide.

Residents living on East Bawtry Road, which carries thousands of visitors a day, said people were coming from miles around to take a look at the flowers.

One, Alan McCue, 48, said: "I can see the funny side but it doesn't really create a good impression of the town. They planted hundreds of bulbs so we're all a bit worried about what might come up next."
(oops. The site I linked to at first was a bit off colour further down the page, sorry...)

I came across a similar story about 10 years ago* that showed photos of several of them from the past, it seems whenever they find them they get cut down. I remember one photo was of a red one in the center of a bunch of yellow leaved trees (fall time, of course). I don’t know if there is significance to the color but either way it is pretty neat.

*At the time some nutjob was claiming that it was a “sign” that the Nazis were going to come back into power.

Did they cut these trees down? I hope that they transported them, to kill them because some dork wrinkle decided to plant them in an offensive layout would be wrong.

    Heh that's kind of funny.

I seriously don't think the swastika should be banned, it has alot of non-Nazi meanings as well. Things should be taken into context, but in this case, it's just too funny. How'd it take them 60 years or so to notice?

    Either way, yeah, kinda funny.

The red and yellow, I would think, represent the red and white of the Nazi flag which represent the social and nationalistic ideas of the Nazi movement.

I don't agree with seemingly universal hatred of the swastika as the Nazi corruption of it is fairly recent and it has 3000 years of "good" history.

I'm having an internal conflict with cutting down trees (it wasn't their fault they were planted!) and respecting Germany's efforts to reconcile itself to its past. I see both sides of a keep them/destroy them argument.

I imagine if the trees were simply moved then they might continue to be used by any neo-Nazi underground (in a totemic, fetishistic way) so...

Trees grow back. Different trees can be planted in a different layout than before. I dont see the concern some have over cutting down 25 trees in a forrest.

The whole affair is downright silly.

I mean for the love of God, this over sensibility over a past that cannot be changed is just down right inane (not "insane").

They shouldn’t cut them down and throw them into a landfill or anything but like any harvesting of trees, if used as lumber or for furniture it is ok in my book. A good straight tree can fetch several hundred bucks or more depending on supply and demand of the specie. Trees are a great renewable resource. BTW they are too big to transplant, it would be almost imposable to dig up enough of the root system for a successful transplant and if they could dig it up transporting it wouldn’t be possible without building a road there, which would require removing more trees.

But wait, those are Nazi trees! Any furniture made from them will surely be evil! And if transplanted there seeds would just re-grow more Nazi trees into the shape of more swastika!

Yeah, I feel the same way... not sure. But if they are cut down, they had better be used properly!

They didn't cut all of them down, just so the swastika didn't show up anymore. At least that is what they did in one case... I don't know if this is the one.

But honestly, I do find it ok that Germany does this. It is a sort of kick in the balls for them. It is not so much the trees are forming a swastika but the fact that they were planted as such in the service and furthering of nazism, by dedicated nazis

Imagine if the KKK managed to do the same with either KKK or some burning cross (black with yellow trees going upwards, this would be possible)... I doubt it would be allowed to stand long, if it was certain that was what it meant. And in this case there can hardly be a doubt as to that.

The Funny thing is that if they cat the trees down, you will still see a swastika. Its just a shame that a symbol like the swastika had to be perverted by jerks.

Not all were cut they said. Just cut a few that would make it not look like a swastika.

Yes, what was it... 90 trees in all? 25 out of that isn't too bad, as it will quickly be covered by branches of the other trees. So in the future there will 'just' be a little collection of birchtrees.
