Well if you want pure killing power, the Sassanid's Immortal units are definately among the top in cavalry. Excellent melee attack, 30 armor, and they are horse archers too. On top of that, they are a general bodyguard unit

I just can't stop loving the Plumbatarii.
Strong in melee, strong in ranged combat and strong in return fire. Andbest of all it costs the same as Comitatenses (no reason to train them when you get Plumbatarii).

I love the Saxon and Frankish units, mostly a personal taste thing. Though I've never actually used the Franceca (SP!) throwing unit for the Franks in campaign.

So Keel Warband (Sax), Axe Heerbann (Franks), and [throwing axe] Heerbann (Franks).

Teh sh1eldwall = teh 1337. Me <3 !!111

I'm looking forward to Beserkers whence I receive my copy of BI.

I like my ERE... but I am biased. (And the tons of Stinky Armored Cav is great too! Horses hate them!)

Overall I like ERE best. For favorite units I'd have to choose two that others have already mentioned:

Plumbatarii - Pretty much the same mellee stats as the Comitatenses, but with a better ranged attack. Believe its 2 stronger than the Pila, plus has a range of 70 instead of 45, and finally they carry 14 of them instead of the 3 Pila. Killer infantry unit vs AI.

Sassinids Immortals. Excellent ranged attack with heavy armor. Deadly in mellee also. The Cat Archers of BI.

Dont forget that they come with their own general (or family member), adding to their killing power in extended campaigns.

I think the Allemanni has a strong line-up.
Excellent infantry with units suchs as lombard berserkers(which are much cooler then the Hounds), war dogs, chosen axemen, night raiders and good cavalry.
And to top it all of they have onagers as well.

Lombard berserkers are the coolest imho.

One thing I love is the "Ya-Ha" confirmation sound they make - you just know theyr'e ready to kill (if somewhat unpredictable).

ERE and Sassanids have the strongest and most flexible unit collections IMO.

At the moment I'd have to say the ERE has the best combo of trundling death dealing cataphracts and heavy infantry - the plumbs and the first cohorts are lethal in player hands. Mixed in with that you have the decent horse archers and eastern archers, making them a pretty well rounded faction.

When CA fix the infantry not throwing stuff before attacking problem, the ERE will also be the faction to fear most as an oponent I reckon.

Coolest units? Well, I'd say my fights against the Huns as both the Franks and the ERE have resulted in the coolest battles, so I'd vote for their many horse archer units being pretty darned cool! The Sassanid Imortals look good and pack a scary punch too - seing 2 units of them trample through my neatly arranged battle line was an unpleasant surprise!

Haven't played the ERE to any great extent, but the Sassanids do it for me. Very strong army overall. Clibinarii, Immortals, Sughadans, Cataphracts... And they're rich, so you can afford them all..

Individual units Ive come across that I like are definitely Hounds of Culaan (Celts), any top level Infantry unit from the Saxons or Franks, and of course Comitatenses.

Actually those that carry pila have only 2, while those that carry normal javelins (meaning no AP) carry 3. So the Plumbatarii are seven-fold stronger in ranged combat on ammo alone, add the superior range and superior missile power... Well they are just evil. Especially on walls. Their plumbata ravage any enemy trying to get up to the walls, then they beat the rest in melee.

Coolest single unit I think are the Lombar Berserkers. Giants with twohanders... But so easily killed by archery. The epitomy of a barbarian. Conan comes un units of 32.

The saxons have the best infantry unit on the game, Hearth Troops will destroy anyone.

To be honest, I don't get the Hearth Troops. At A 11 and D 23 they should be way better than Keels, but with lower troops numbers, the higher cost and the 2 turn build they just don't seem better enough to justify them...

Plus if you are fighting armies if heavy cavalry the Keel's spear bonus really tips the balance... Finally by the time you are building Hearth Troops your Keels are +1 to experience already...

One for one the Hearth Troops should win, but when it comes to holding a defensive line with the Shield Wall the Keels (with a good general) are the man...

And if you want assault troops I would go for the Chosen Axemen with their attack of 14 and charge of 5 (plus 1 turn recruitment) they are pretty effective...

Right, enough negativity...

I have not played as the Celts yet , but have fought against them as the WRE and he Saxons and they have a pretty wacky and effective troop mix...

So if lombards are the best so are the Burgundi and Alemeni(sp) because they all have the same units lol, just different colours.

Surely not exactly the same units?

I was talking about coolest unit anyway...

Of coolest range of units, I pick the Franks.

There is a little variety between them but they all have the basic structure of units, the best variety of units would be western roman empire. The big problem with the Franks is they have probably the worst moral in the game.

Hmmm, you'd know better than me, I still haven't managed to get a battle cos of the CTD problem.

Using the Campaign patch to make the Romano-British playable, i'd have to say they are my favorite faction, granted their units aren't the greatest, it's the kind of units they have that really interest me.

The Graal Knight is my favorite unit in BI, they aren't the strongest cavalry, but it reminds me so much of King Arthur and gives a nice taste of the Medieval times :P.

In campaign I've been a bit disappointed with my Saxon Hearth Troops. They consistently seem to die faster than my Chosen Axemen, despite having apparently higher defense. And the Axemen kill more.

I like the overall Saxon mix of units, but I was soundly defeated on my last H/H game with them. I moved on to the Huns (H/H), and I'm finding that their cav roster is quite good. Enemy generals can still be a pain, but I've been able to hold against anything that's come my way so far. Of course I'm still fairly early in the game.....

I really look forward to playing one of the Roman factions. I had a "sneak peek" mini-campaign as the ERE just to see if the AI was any more aggressive, and I wasn't disappointed. While I was getting my gonads handed to me by the Sassanids and Goths, I saw that the ERE were capable of training some very interesting units with an Eastern flavor, making them quite different from the WRE lineup. I can't wait to really sink my teeth into a Roman campaign and get some priests chanting out on the battlefield.

Love the Berserkers, Hounds, Heart troops, Heerbahns etc etc but my personal favourite must be the Graal Knights - wow! I do hope we can go back to MTW with the next TW-game.
You can find cool/ useful troops in all factions but, a bit off topic, here“s my personal flavour:

1. ERE
2. Sassanids
3. Franks

Based NOT on cool units but rather on the best combo of units.

Well after a bit of modding around with unused textures/models found with BI, I've come to the conclusion the Saxons are the best.

I mean, look at the brilliance of this unit:

Stunningly beautiful. It's like Jason from Friday the 13th got stuck in a blender with an orangutan and a Saxon General and this was the end result. Guaranteed to scare the enemy witless.
