Default The People's Republic of Scotland

It has been reported that public sector in Scotland accounts for over half of the Scottish economy. In someplaces, it accounts for three quarters of the economy is from the Government. Almost one quarter of those employed work for the public sector. Most job positions available are for government jobs, most of which are unneeded and unwanted (my own school recently obtained two youth workers, two support staff (or runners delivering messages), and a psychologist; the city council has burst out of the substantial Tayside House). And now the Executive wants to create the post of Human Rights Commissioner, to go alongside the current Children's Commissioner and a few others (or Czar as these commissioners are also called), with no actual powers but a staff and £1,000,000 running costs each. Some other posts (from the article) include accessibility strategy manager, head of analytical services, food & health alliance co-ordinator, and senior business efficiency reviewer.

There is nothing quite like good government.

And this is nothing like goo....

This surprises me not at all. Look at the election results: Scotland always votes deep red. I assumed you just all liked working for the local councils?

You should have a look at the jobs page in the Guardian when its public sector day: terrifying. I'm all in favour of public sector employees who actually do something that makes life better, like teachers or doctors or dustbin men, but its the legions of outreach co-ordinators, gender diversity plan managers and other assorted form fillers who make me angry.

IMHO what we need is a review whereby every post in the public sector that does not involve a direct interaction with the public is tested for abolition. Of course we will still need some managers and accountants and things but I bet you could get rid of a million perfectly pointless jobs easily.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, or Sctoland in this case. It reeks of toadyism and corruption. Something which, alas, comes with any government.
