    Default Television

I've been hearing a lot about TV recently so I thought I;de start a poll. I personally don't watch tv at all anymore, not even the news. I get all news from the internet anyways, and in about 2 minutes I've read through all of the titles. But anyways, I hear a lot from my classmates that they watch TV all the time at their dorms. I can't believe people waste their time that way. Seriously what is entertaining about anything on TV?

New, History Channel, an occasional West Wing re-run.

Nothing about Paris Hilton interests me. Unless she chooses to give me access to her trust funds, that is unlikely to change. I prefer women with figures and brains (PH may possess the latter, though undemonstrated).

What is the point of watching all those crap shows? Will they improve you as a person? Will they improve your relationships? The answer is obviously no.

Sure a young person can learn a lot from some of those those scientific and historical programs, but other then that, I don't see anything that Tv can provide. I think we should all turn them off, and do something more productive, like work out, get in a fight, go snowborading, have sex, play Total War, read philosophy, take a course at college. In time those things pay off, especially Total War, in case you become a dictator and need to the killing skills.

@Byzantine Prince, I hope a TV lands on you. It would be ironic.

    read philosophy
In my opinion, that would be a waste of time. It would be better to make your own philosophy, sell a load of books about it, and get rich.

Most of them are light entertainment, while QI is very informative, the thinking mans comedy.

Some of the things you class as productive, get in a fight/go snowboarding/read philosophy, I would class as a waste of time, but then you're still young. I have plenty of things to fill my time like cooking, reading, DIY, work, archery and maybe Aikido in the future.

I love TV. It is my best friend. From animal planet, the food network, cartoon network, the history, military, discovery, sci-fi, channels to cnn and back to the networks for my favorite primetime shows and sports then later music, my cable has dozens of music channels and my little one loves music time before bath time. All from my best friend, TV.

That being said, about 80% of the time it is on it is a background item and not the focus or our daily events. We are almost always reading, working, surfing the net, doing chores, playing or doing something while it is on.

When I have time to waste, I occasionally waste it on watching tv. Very rarely do I catch snippets of debates or other developments because seeing some of the footage helps me explain other peoples' reactions to events.

Oh man yeah, if I had a TV in my room it would be for background noice. I don't know what it is about it, but it's kind of soothing in a wierd sort of way...

I can't really play RTW when my parents aren't home, because it doesn't feel right. I can't hear the TV from the living room when they aren't home. When they are home, I don't like to log on the forums for some reason. It's pretty crazy...

I wasn't able to vote because an option that accurately describes my use of TV was not listed.

I rarely watch TV. I enjoy good movies, but tend to watch DVDs/VHSs rather than TV broadcasts. Generally speaking, I AVOID the news. In a best-selling book called "Eight Weeks to Optimal Health," the author strongly recommends gradual reduction of news intake as a crucial part of stress management. Since I've stopped watching the news regularly, I seem to be a lot less stressed. I'll trade away my level of awareness regarding who killed who and what destroyed what for more peace of mind and body any day.

I like headline news and sometimes regular cnn but I hate watching my local news for the same reason you mention.

Toga, watching DVD's is not what I meant by watching Tv(even though that's where you might watch them). I watch DVD's a lot on my computer, but it's mainly because I consider it an art form more then simply entertainment. I'm really interested in films, and I've considered actually making one for some time now.

Also you make a good point about the news. Just reading the headlines is good enough I think. Seeing things in detail is not productive at all in my opinion. But knowing general events, I've found, often keeps you in the loop of things. You wouldn't something like 9/11 to hapen and not know about it, for example.

I used to watch tv more when I was young, but I didn't know any better. I've learned that it contributes nearly nothing, and that I already what all the shows are from other people and if I want I can just rent the DVD's or download them.

But the point is that it shouldn't become like a routine of a waste of time.

I'm an anime sucker (yes, yet another Adult Swim fan...not really...I just like the anime they broadcast) and therefore is very into it. Otherwise I don't care about TV, news or not. Of course, my youth and my situation makes it difficult to obtain DVDs, and my personal ethics (founded partly by my own laziness to find websites to download or find a spyware-less P2P, lol) is very against P2P or Torrent downloading. The anime market in the US is large, in my personal opinion/experience, but most use that kind of downloading for their "stuff." Therefore, the industry suffers stagnant growth, and average "legitimate" fans like me have to endure higher product costs.

Thus, my reliance on anime on TV.

It feels like a wrong forum posting about anime in the .org though... :)

I've been watching old movies more often lately, but I don't watch TV unless it's late and I'm bored. Rescue Me is a show I enjoy. Other than that, it's something on the History Channel, or the Venture Bros.

Actually, I'm considering getting into TNA Wrestling, in all honesty. I used to watch wrestling avidly as a child, but have grown disappointed with the incredibly lame spectacles presented by the WWE now that it has (had) a monopoly on the market. I saw a taping on TNA at a friend's house the other day, and I must say it's refreshing to see that kind of athletic display at this point.

You guys don't know it yet but one day when you'll be really old(ie.Gawain), you will think back to all the hours you've spent on TV and think to yourself, "What a total waste of my life that was!"

I wonder if Gawain has realised that yet.
