You do know that it is only final when the prisoner gets the last of three vials right? And that the needle is in for some period of time before the first vial is emptied.

I believe I even saw a condemned man speak his last words sprapped down with the needle in. We are speaking of several minutes at least, and it is not unheard of for last second saves. Is it really that bad to make sure that things just don't go wrong.
When the state kills it has to be perfect about it. No sloppy job at it, and this would be just that.

Try to explain a man dying from bloodpoisoning after he was found to be innocent after all and was pardoned just before the last vial was to be empitied. Nice indeed...
