Is there a quick fix for depression?
If so let's hear some suggestions, and make them good. Even if they are humourous, it doesn't matter. Sometimes even jokes can be helpful.

Get a pet. A dog or a cat - or any pet that can show emotion.
It helps.

If it is depression then talk to a professional.
If you are feeling down in the dumps do things that make you feel happy, or break your routine. Go swimming, eat a new food, read a different style of book (pulp), see an old western, exercise etc. The idea is that maybe you are just very bored and your brain needs a new stimulus until it can handle doing whatever you normally like to do.

Get a cat. But it just helps, it doesn't fix it. Oh, and pot. But its only temporary.

See a therapist. Or a psychologist if it's serious.
If you want to hide your depression and let it gnaw away at your subconscious, eventually driving you insane, I would suggest

Run until you can run no more. the endomorphins released should help. or any strenuous physical activity.

Agreed, its really the only way to help it if you have depression. It's expensive, but it works.Originally Posted by Papewaio

I've tried talking to a professional. It really hasn't done anything for me. I find I am too complex. Plus I have a weird depression that sort comes and goes in waves, I'm never trulyl happy except when I am at the end of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but that takes forever to read.

If you feel depressed rarely, it might be because of boredom, or specific things. If you feel like you are depressed all the time, professional help plus medication is a good solution. It doesnt work with all people, but medication can help turn someone's depression around. It worked with me.
Ignoring the obvious "Cheer up, emo kid", I have nothing further to add that hasnt already been echoed by Papewaio and meatwad and steppe and who knows who else.
Endorphins are nice, work out, ride a bike, join a martial arts class and spar for a half hour or so, find a rock wall to climb.
But if this is true depression and not an average 'I feel down because I'm human' thing see a psychiatrist. If you have a chemical imbalance that causes it you can get medication for it.

Actually, that doesn't sound as severe as I thought at first. From what I picture of this, I would strongly suggest:Originally Posted by Byzantine Prince
-grass (in moderate amounts, it can clear up the mind)
-Henry Miller (he's crazy, sure, but he can really wake you up and show you how to feel alive)
-Zorba the Greek (see above)
-Find a better lifestyle. I was kinda your way until I hit college and could really live on my own and be as crazy as I wanted to be. Just find your niche.
Also, if that doesn't work, you could try Prozac... but it's better to avoid medication, for the most part (try to limit yourself to the small to medium doses of THC.) It is best to do this kind of thing mainly naturally.

Yeah, I like this one. I don't care about drugs so much. I think my life needs to change though, but for that to hapen, i need two things I don't have and I really want. It seems that I'll never have these two things.Originally Posted by meatwad

Are you still in High School, BP? I know I was depressed as hell in HS. All I can say is make sure you have some clear purpose, a goal you're working towards, that is meaningful to you. Keep busy doing meaningful things.
This is hard during High School if you don't find any of the available activities meaningful.
In the long run you will have to go out into the real world and get the crap beat out of you. Learn about life by living it, set goals, accomplish them, build a sense of self. In other words, as Meatwad said, find your niche.
I'm making these specific recommendations because you seem to be a bright guy, and you seem to be young. A good general rule is that if you try to develop yourself into a person that other people won't think of as an annoying little schnip, you will end up feeling much better!
Such is growing up.

(That’s funny as hell to me because of BP’s recent “television” thread)
Seriously thou, I know TV isn’t your thing so try listing to some fun music, even if it is not “your style”. I can’t be depressed when listing to Frank Sinatra’s upbeat songs and they are sooo not my style. Fun Christmas music works too, especially off-season.![]()
Although it’s not always an option (sure wasn’t that often for me when I was in school), sex is a pretty good anti depressant. Maybe even with Frank Sinatra playing but probably not with the Christmas music.![]()

It all depends on the type of depression. If its situational - change the situation that you are in or if that is not possible find something to occupy your thoughts whenever possible.
If it is a clinical depression - its best to seek professional help. Drugs are not always necessary but a professional mental health expert can help you more then you might realize - if nothing else to point out the rational thought process from the irrational.

Unfortunately that happens regularly from all I hear. If a therapist is not appealing to you, the best is to look for another one.Originally Posted by Byzantine Prince
A quick - but temporary - help for depression that is also used in clinical settings is sleep depression. If you stay awake for 36 hours, you´ll begin to feel happy. It´s advised not to do that alone though.
Do you have moments of extreme happiness between the bouts of depression? What your describing with comes and goes in waves - almost sounds like my wife's condition of bi-polar. She is what is termed a rapid cycler - she sometimes has up to three manic - severe depression espisodes a year.Originally Posted by Byzantine Prince

It took 6 different professionals before my wife found one that she could relate to and describe her depression to. So that is nothing unique - just because they are professional and a therapist does not make them a fit for every personal. I have found with my wife that mental health professionals and especially therapists sometimes focus on one type of counselling.

It's definetly situational at its core. I've been having a lot of pressure to perform at school, and I also have other problems that add on to that. There is also a certain routine every day that is very confortable but also constant, and tiresome. I need a change in routine for sure.Originally Posted by Redleg
