    Hmm, if I remember correctly, didn't the romans maintain a very small influence over Gaul near where modern Paris is up until 486 AD? I remember reading that somewhere but i'm not completely sure

    Yes, the Gallo-Roman Syagrius ruled north-western Gaul around Soissons as Dux until 486. His 'kingdom' was overthrown by king Chlodovech (Clovis) of the Franks. I agree that the date of 476 as end date is a bit conservative. It also gives you a sense of urgence as you advance through the game as it is only about 230 turns long.
