    Default History of Japan 1870-1936

With Christmas just around the corner, it it time to decide what books I want. I am becoming more interested in Imperial Japan history prior to world war 2.

    Currently I have the following:

The Russo Japanese war 1904-05 (Osprey men-at-arms)
The Russo Japanese war 1904-05 (Osprey essential histories)

    Could anybody suggest any others.

The Nobility of Failure: Tragic Heroes in the History of Japan (1975) by Ivan I. Morris is a must. It describes an age-old Japanese attraction to lost causes that goes a long way toward explaining 20th century developments.

I do have a book called rising sun by John Toland
Its 954 pages long and is split into eight chapters. Is this the same one.
