Its a measure of how things have changed since the 50s that everyone remains reasonably normal (albeit obviously rather depressed) rather than all going beserk and trying to kill and eat their neighbours and sleep with their dogs, or possibly vice versa, which is no doubt what would happen if the book was written today.
