I have it set to small right now. I tried huge, but that stretched way out across the screen. It was a frantic scolling back and forth trying to reach units under attack. Huge units do look VERY impressive, though. Even though I just built my computer back in March, if I have full armies set to huge, with the graphical settings all the way up, it chops up to much to be enjoyable. I may set the unit size up to normal some time. I wish Rome shipped with replays included. I love just watching the battles.![]()

Yes I Prefer It Small I Did A Practice Match Against 2 Ai With 1 Ally 120 Units It Was Horribly Slow THough I did Win Due to Lettiing Ally Decimate His whole Army Weakening Enemy Incredibly So My Cav Could Come In and Make Easy Work Once Generals Of Enemy Routed Or were Killed It Took Over A Half Hour to Move Over Basically Flat land And Begin Attacks ...Im Rambling Sorry :DOriginally Posted by Syxx_Killer

I use 60 when playing Shogun. this allows for more manuevering, as the maps in STW are smaller than in MTW (and, I assume, in RTW). Morale (and hence, flanking) is "the name of the game" in TW battles, so manueverability on the map is tres important.
I've played some interesting multiplayer MTW games with 100 men per unit. The battles last longer, and ranged units (archers in particular, for obvious reasons) seem more effective. Because the maps are bigger, I didn't feel that my cav units' mobility were limited.
The main problem with larger units is it can cause a lot of lag when playing online if even one player has a slow connection or PC. I was using a very old PC over a dial-up connection when I was active, so I preferred 60-man unit sizes in STW, and the default unit size in MTW.

When I first got RTW I played on Default/Normal, as I did with the other TW games. But when I upgraded my PC earlier this year I swiched to Huge to get an idea of what the performance was. Since it generally handles it okay I've become fairly used to Huge. It does have seem to have some balancing issues, and some other niggling problems (particularly in sieges) but the sheer spectacle of so many soldiers still impresses me.

MY computer Holds Out Pretty Good In 60 and 80 Mp i havent gone any farther because thats when the lag starts so when i want a huge battle I Must Do It On Single OR Ill Quite Possibly drop Quickly or Fall So Far Behind :S I Hate Slow Computers ^_^

I use the biggest unit size in M:TW and S:TW because it makes the battles more epic and the doubled building times increase the challenge. In R:TW I used to play at huge, but this led the computer to depopulate its own cities, so I stepped back to large. I'd like to know if the game still does this after the 1.3 patch.![]()

I ocasionally try out 120 in singleplayer... but in mp and most of the time in sp too I use 60. same reason as stated by TogakureOJonin. The more maneuvring the faster the enemy routs![]()

I have mine on default. My pc sucks lol. Of course if you're talking about preference.... I would say as big as I can get. Not to mention that I want more than 16 units to play. I hate reinforcements as they aren't as effective as they should be especially when the general has routed/ died.
I find that if I use anything bigger than large the lag gets pretty bad, especially when I get attacked by hordes in BI (2-3 stacks of enemies with 120 men per unit is enough to give my PC some problems). Besides it makes it quite difficult to recruit armies if you have it set higher- especially at the beginning of a campaign.
I only use Huge. I want to feel like I'm fighting majors battle, not a skirmishs.
Neither of my computers is even up to big battles on large. Huge would be my preferred choice, and large is acceptable. Now, I can only do normal (and small)...
Hey All;
I would have to go with the Large estimate, because iIhave worked
out consistent FPS with the P III that I have installed with 64 VRAM.
I do remember that in campaign mode, having larger units did call upon
your resources, which made for a more challenging game.![]()

I use Huge, and all the other settings to High, Highest, except unit detail. I reduce it one setting as I find this does a good job of cutting down lag. Also, I turn off the fancy stuff like shadows, etc. Whenever, the combination of AI armies and my own start causing more lag, I pause the battle and bring up the options screen and readjust the unit detail down another notch. This generally reduces most of the lag.
I like the huge size, but it does require more scrolling. I wish you could zoom out further, instead of having to scroll. Whenever, it starts getting choppy, I just cut back on Unit Detail, and I don't run Battle shadows or Glint at all. Everything else is turned all the way to max/maximum/huge. Unit Detail reduction seems to have the best effect on reducing the choppiness, and you can change it on the fly during the battle, so when there are fewer units and less choppiness, I increase it back to maximum.Originally Posted by Syxx_Killer
Huge adds difficulty and realism to battles. Once a unit is committed to battle it is much harder to pull them away (or through) and give new orders. I find this realistic. Command and Control is much more difficult, which makes the game more challenging and fun.

I had started a thread in a different spot pretty much asking the question where this adjustment was. I had changed mine by accident and would like to change it to a smaller number again but i dont see where the option is?
I have it set to 40 in a unit (most units). My computer will really not allow for more than that, so when I upgrade I will be able to use more...
In all games it is in the option menu under unit size.Originally Posted by Breeze
