    Hello,

Is there some way to slow the speed of projectiles fired from a siege tower or from fixed towers? I would prefer to eliminate this stupid feature for siege towers.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

descr_engines.txt. Find the tower entries, remove the arrow_generators.

What do I have to change where to slow down the fire rate?

Increase the "fire interval" setting for each of the arrow generators. Default is 1.5, so going to 3 will cut the fire rate in half. 6 cuts it to 1/4, etc. Fire rate is rather low at 6.

Has it been tried if removing the firing ability altgether is possible? If it's not, is there a known upper limit for the fire rate (to make it so hight that it will fire once and then practically never)?

I don't think it would be hard to remove them. Look at what parts of the file fixes the position of the arrow generator and its stats, then comment them out, or cut them down to a single unit.

If you want them to fire no rounds, or far fewer, change the number of rounds to 0 or 2. (1 is usually not allowed--at least it isn't in export_descr_units.txt, haven't tested it in the descr_engines.txt--causes game to CTD on loading if I remember correctly.) It's just something to experiment with.

However, keep in mind that siege towers were indeed used to sweep defenders off the walls historically. Some were just fixed ramps and small towers. The defenders would build timber towers on their walls at times to retain the height advantage. The current fire rate is pretty high, discharging each weapon every 1.5 secs, but you can cut that back so that it is a steady stream instead of a rapidfire burst.

There is probably a place in a file somewhere to set the "build points" for these things as well, but I do not know where. One issue with RTW is that sapping and building towers is an awfully short process.

Actually I went ahead and did that last night. Will test today.

Without personnel making them do that? RTW siege towers and RTW/MTW towers/gates are magic machines firing automatically, without human intervention. AFAIK, it can't be modded to act according to reality (such as you have to deploy units to operate them and they cease to work once the unit leaves etc.) so I had to take them out.

    Just rant below:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
If the player is assaulting, their defensive value is minimal for the AI, because I will simply keep my units/artillery at a safe distance until reaching the exact attacking point and walk a unit or two on the walls to take the ownership of the wall towers. Whether on offense or defense, the AI will send its troops adjacent to the walls/towers firing upon them, running, and they will deplete without a fight. So, for example, defending a settlement with stone walls+ against some 4,000 man horde army with a couple of melee units supported by one or two missiles deployed on the walls and seeing the 4,000 horde melt down to hundreds due to losing 90% of its infantry without a fight (and the remaining 10% with a fight) isn't fun but time consumption after the first couple of times. Similarly, attacking a Roman town full of Comitatanses and other high valour units with demi-craps such as chosen swordsmen and taking it barely killing the general with a spear/heavy cav. charge due to the AI having suicided all valuable units to the enemy captured towers, without even attempting to retake them, doesn't feel like historical.

    Further rant:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Even in a relatively outdated city building game such as Emperor: RotMK, whose main focus isn't battles and in which battles are pretty much simplified, you have to spare labout to man your city towers/gates in order for them to operate against invading enemy. That aspect diminished to sub-carton childishness in a TotalWar game still in its third version makes me . But I still love TW and am addicted to it.

Thanks for your help kind sir.

Any guesses from the mod-hardened ones?

OK, show_err helped a great deal (thanks for it CA ) and I believe I managed to neutralize the siege towers. But the engine file apparently doesn't deal with wall towers. Where are they, if any? Can they be modded at all?
