The Poutine Poll

Now, I know I've talked about poutine before and even made a big deal about the supposed lack of gravy in Holland. What I'd really like to know is how many people actually do like it and how many hate it.

Personally, it's right up there with Ambrosia. Also, it's one of the few things in the world that is uniquely Canadian.

You mean this stuff? Never tried it. I would though (I'll try almost anything once). Doesn't look or sound all that bad ... .

EDIT2: I think if I ate too much of that "I" would be the one looking bad before too long ... .

It doesn't look good to me, but I can't say I'd never try it. If I had the oppurtunity I might try it, but I'm not going to go our of my way to try it either.

It may look kinda gross, but let me tell you, when you get back from the bar at 3 in the morning and have the munchies, hot fries and gravy packed with cheese is exactly what the doctor ordered.

I was hesitant at first, but when I did my undergrad near the Quebec border, this was a staple of college food, and I still have fond memories of Bubba's Poutine down near the end of Princess Street in Kingston. Give it a try!

Hmm. What is it with chips? Here in the UK, we put salt and vinegar on them. (straightforward, tasty, obviously right). Over in belgium, mayonnaise (weird).. And now some sort of cheese-gravy combo?

Its only a matter of time before someone reveals that they put custard on theirs.

As the true representitive of poutine (I'm a Quebecer), I can offer perhaps the most informed opinion.

Great poutine is great, or at least good.

Anything less than great is barf.

Ah mate ! We could argue a long time on who know its poutine the best ! Until we can make the absolute test, the test of tasting our home made poutine, i think we'll have to wait until giving to any the title of Maitre de la Poutine !

In New Brunswick, there is an earlier traditional Acadian dish known as poutine râpée, which is completely different from the "poutine québécoise". The Acadian poutine is a ball of grated and mashed potato, salted, filled with pork in the centre, and boiled. The result is a moist greyish ball about the size of a baseball. Wow, it is indeed a small world. We have something called Raspeballer that would be the equivalent. It could be as the encyclopedia suggest an imported German dish.
It should be pronounced with Hoch Deutsch "R's"...

It's evolution, baby. There's nothing wrong with salt and vinegar, but it doesn't hit the spot like a nice, big styrofoam container of poutine does.
