I don't have either, but I've got a soft spot for dogs.

But, a lot depends on the personality of the animal. We used to have two cats living near us that were just like dogs. If I'd sit out on the porch the neighbor cats would come over, sit down, and hang out. Right next door there was an asinine dog that would slobber, bark, and chase kids around the neighborhood. So, personality matters a lot.

For the rat fans: have you ever seen hairless rats? They're a pretty funky breed. Completely bald. They end up looking like a pink and wrinkly scrotum. You could take one to college, get the girls to pet it, and then say: "Hey, do you wanna see something funny?"

On second thought, probably a bad idea.

I also like Bearded Dragons. They're reptiles from Australia. Completely unafraid of humans. They're tan in color... and sort of look like the Jem'Haddar from Deep Space Nine... but much nicer. The coolest thing about Bearded Dragons though is that if you get two of them together they'll wave at each other. They actually pick up one of their front claws and slowly wave at each other. Pretty cool.

    Both.

Some pure bred dogs are as think as posts though. I prefer dogs that are smarter like labs, colliers and most sheep dogs... animals that are smart, hardworking and social.

Cats are picky. They are not nice to everyone, but will be nice to you if you are consistently nice to them.

All I can say is that some of them act like they would have sense of humor.
Never had much trouble keeping them corraled, except for full grown bulls. They were tough to keep fenced in, but it was a case of mass exceeding what a very long fence could endure. Brute force, not brains.

Pigs are very smart animals, they could work the latches, so we had to wire gates for pig enclosures. Cows...never figured out the latches we used.

Now I had a cat that opened doors using the door knobs! No joke! He was very good at it, and we didn't teach him the trick either! Never had a dog that did that. If this cat wanted in a room and you didn't want him in, you had to lock the door. He would stretch out to full length and start pawing both sides of the knob until he got it to turn. There would be some frantic rattling, then the door would open and he sould saunter in like royalty reclaiming his rightful throne.

Cats run faster and jump higher than pigs or dogs. I have chased cats and dogs before so I know this.

    See? Cats win!

And they're winning in the polls!

Though my real soft spot is with Pandas, I do realize they can slay me simply by trying to hug my small body with the power of love and peace so great in them.

That makes them exotic. Don't you prefer more when you have to work for a lady's...ahem...affection, instead of claiming and easy one? To gain a cat's loyalty and affection alone makes them worthy rivals, something we humans need.

That makes them easier to pet, then!

On a side note, I find it most interesting that pigs were used as street cleaners/mobile sewers during Medieval and even later times. They must've really EATEN everything. Eww.

On another side note, rats are evil, dirty, scary, nauseating creatures. Remember, rat owners, those little oh-so-cute devils are related to Hamtaro and the corpse-rats of the World War I trenches (predecessors, I guess, of the worst kind of New York sewer rats). They eat human flesh for GAH's sake! [propaganda mode for World War One*]they steal our soldiers' bread, eat our dead soldiers' flesh, attack our unwary soldiers, kill and devour our soldiers' dogs and cats (for real), and put nauseating unhygienic threat to our soldiers' lives!!! [/propaganda mode]

well, cats are alot smarter and cleaner. but they aren't loya(I admit that part of the reason is that they CAN survive with out you, the same cannot be said of Dogs...)

But Dogs are loyal. They follow blindly and, for the most part, just can't see whats coming(I admit that part of this is just because they aren't very smart)

So, Dogs are better IMHO but for the wrong reasons

I don't think I've ever encountered a more loyal creature than the cat I just lost in August. Granted, he was a special case. I've had many cats, and most weren't committed to me like KeenEye was. In general I guess I would have to agree, that dogs appear to be more loyal than cats.

    Concentrate on purity of intent

    .
I had a full cat family last year in mom's village; the husband, the wife and the sis in law. Firstly the husband approached us, gained our love (and food ), secured a place to nap...and then brought in the wifey. Early days, he would demand food as if for himself and then let the lady have it. Gradually, she began to request on her own.

I wouldn't let them into certain rooms of the house, just in case, and one day, after feeding them, I needed some rest and decided to retire to my room. The wifey followed me on but stopped when I asked her to sit and wait for me there. I went in, read a book for nearly half an hour, took a quick nap for about fifteen minutes and when I was back, she was waiting for me.
