Is there a mod file available where it eliminates ex-communication? As much fun as it is quelling rebellions when I get ex-communicated for the most trivial reasons, I'd like to have the option of removing the Pope's ability to excommunicate me. I'd find more fun in focusing on conquest and on expanding my borders without the Pope's interference.
No mod there but it is easy. Take out Setactivefraction: FN_Papal and excommunication is gone. Excommunication is based on who is against Papalstaes and who supports them, no papalstates and it is away.
Or play the pope and excommuicate people

How do I go about entering that command line to remove the Papal State?
Change the Word Minor to Major by the Setactivefraction: FN_Papal! Than you get the Pope and everybody who attacks you is excommunicated!

I opened the startpos folder and it has four files in it. Which one do I alter and how do I alter it to elminate ex-communication?
You should open Early, High, or Late, but forget what these guys say about it, it's easier to do then that. You should scroll down till you find
"SetBehaviour:: FN_PAPIST POPE"
All you should do is change "POPE" on the end there to oh, say, "CATHOLIC_DEFENSIVE_CRUSADER" or "DESPERATE_DEFENCE" or perhaps "MUSLIM_DEVOUT", whatever you want.

That would eliminate ex-communication (I am assuming), but what are the other ramifications of the command change?
Yeah, then they're not the pope, but that's easier and less destructive than the other suggestions. Removing excomunication while keeping the properties of the pope is impossible right now, it would be hard coded in the program.
