I believe it started when the celts (who had their own rituals at this time) were conquerd by the Romans (who also had their own rituals). They mixed and were spread as a lot of different names that eventually became "Halloween"

Wouldn't the earlier festivals be about the equinox not the 31st ?

started in Ireland around 1000 BC as a celebration for the harvest and evoled IMO
