The most common types of RAM are DDR RAM and DDR2 RAM.. I doubt if previous ones like SD-RAM and RDRAM still exist..
The common ones are DDR and DDR2 ones as just I said. You may easily guess that DDR2 is a newer tech that requires a motherboard upgrade..
The motherboards types are basically discriminated from each other according to their chipset manufacturers. The most common chipset manufacturers are Intel, VIA, Nvidia and SiS. Though their chipsets have different structures and so their drivers are, they are all accompanying the common tech about other components such as CPU socket, APG or PCI-Express slots for video cards, onboard LAN or Audio chips, RAM compatibility and IDE or SCSI controllers or RAID availability for hard disk drives..
Hope this helps for a start...

I got the RAM section done. The report has grown to 8 pages long. I think it will be 10 by the time I am done. I should get an A.
The motherboards are still driving me mad. On one website there was 800 different types.
Thanks for the help so far.![]()
