Thread: Coursework help- motherboards and RAM
The_Doctor 21:44 11-03-2005
Background- I have to create a report about a computer system for a charity organisation. On it I have to talk about purpose, specification, upgradability, recommendations, software, cost and the final specs.

What I need help with- I also have to talk about different types of make of components eg, ATI and nVidia, and what the advantages and disadvantages of it is. I have done most of it and just need help with the RAM and motherboards.

What are the most common types of RAM? I have long list of different types, but I am not sure what the difference is.

What types of motherboard are there?

Maybe there should be a section of the Org dedicated to help members with homework and coursework. I don't mean cheating, just help.

Ooh, sounds fun! For the RAM, i recommend going on something like CCL Online. Go to the RAM section and just make a list of the different makes of RAM and then count how many of each there are, while for the motherboards, just go to the mobo section make a list of the different types.

The internet is your friend, use it!

The most common types of RAM are DDR RAM and DDR2 RAM.. I doubt if previous ones like SD-RAM and RDRAM still exist..

The common ones are DDR and DDR2 ones as just I said. You may easily guess that DDR2 is a newer tech that requires a motherboard upgrade..

The motherboards types are basically discriminated from each other according to their chipset manufacturers. The most common chipset manufacturers are Intel, VIA, Nvidia and SiS. Though their chipsets have different structures and so their drivers are, they are all accompanying the common tech about other components such as CPU socket, APG or PCI-Express slots for video cards, onboard LAN or Audio chips, RAM compatibility and IDE or SCSI controllers or RAID availability for hard disk drives..

Hope this helps for a start...

I got the RAM section done. The report has grown to 8 pages long. I think it will be 10 by the time I am done. I should get an A.

The motherboards are still driving me mad. On one website there was 800 different types.

Thanks for the help so far.
