    Question old player; forgot everything

okay, some quick and easy questions: (warlord edition; non-gold non-mongol)

what's the minimum amount of stuff i need to recruit the battlefield ninjas & the kensai.

is there any essential mod i need (ala the "bugfix" variety the community agrees on)

whats the best way to boost the naginata's honour?

when replenishing a drained unit, can i retrain it at a castle that has less tech upgrades than it has currently (and still keep the old armor/wpn lvls?)

are there any guides out there for the far NE blue coloured clan (on expert)?

    kensai: legendary sword dojo
battlefield ninja: sword dojo, 2nd degree ninja house and battlefield ninja dojo

if I understand you correctly, no. if you want to play mp you'll need the 1.02 stats.. available at www.totalwar.com

I think.. a legendary yari dojo. or a lot of fighting.. but that'll cost men.

I'm not sure. Either it isn't possible in a lower-degree-dojo's castle, or it is but your unit will have lower honour, weapon and armour.

check the thread 'shogun campaign stories' and click the link 'A Shogun puzzle with the Uesugi'. THat thread contains quite some good info about them.

ouch! shogun doesn't like Alt-Tabbing. lol.

hrm. thx tonnes. I do see one thing you might want to note: so far i've tried retraining depleted ashigura at a basic spear dojo (no provincial upgrades) and they kept their wpn/armour BUT took a hit to honour

Yes. You've got a partial unit of combat-experienced ashis (the additional experience and capability represented by higher honor), that are merging with newly trained but not tried recruits without battle experience (hence, lower capability/honor). Some kind of rounding takes place, but if there are more recruits in the unit after a merge than experienced warriors, you will see a reduction in the unit's honor value.

I don't retrain. I merge two units of the same honor together whenever I can (drag one and drop it on another in the army rectangle at the bottom of the screen; the RECEIVING unit's upgrades will be kept, so be careful; honor is still rounded). After a big battle I do this with all unit types leftover, then I keep all the leftover partial units (one of each unit type in that province) in a separate stack. I keep this partial stack one province behind my front lines, and move it up after a battle to merge. This way, troops don't have to return to a particular province to be returned to full strength (and the partial stack's units usually have higher honor than new recruits, because they've been fighting). Using this method I rarely have to fight a battle with partial units in an army. New recruits are almost always flowing from training provinces to the front lines anyway, based on how I set up my supply lines and manage my economy.

I use kinda the same method: I have like one army full of damaged units. I just move in any damaged to it, so I have a few man of every type. I use the army a bit to maintain loyalty and keep it out of fights. also when I have an important gen which unit is damaged I can 'repair' it with the 'army'. this army is kinda strong though, because the 'used' units gained much honour in battle

hmmmm...haven't gotten the darned sword dojo "cutscene" yet. argh argh. is it calced on a single battle or can you build the kill tally up over a few turns?

the interesting thing about upgrading/retraining is i had a gold armour ashigaru and sent it into a castle with only lvl3 wpnry. it came out with both!

speaking of which, do gold plated units tire quicker than non-upgraded units?

Each soldier has an individual honor value, and the number you see is just some kind of average. So if you have a 30 man honor 4 unit and you retrain it you will see the honor drop to 2, but all of those men will still be honor 4. I also like to keep all the experienced units together. I never combine or retrain cavalry though, those 13 man honor 7 yar cav units are the most powerful in the game.
