Thread: I untick "Allow AI to control this army"

  1. #1

Default I untick "Allow AI to control this army"

....and when I get to the battle the reinforcements are still AI controlled :(

This has happened several times now and since giving the AI control of an army is akin to just disbanding it (since the AI in this game is so terrible) this is somewhat frustrating. Especially so when the AI ALWAYS attacks the stack with the captain and leaves the second stack (under control of my five star Faction Leader) under the suicidal control of the idiotic AI which then proceeds to march him back and forth in front of epic stone walls until he is dead. Not to mention splitting up the rest of that army and flinging it unit by unit at a concentrated enemy army.

How did the AI in this game ever get past testing? The MTW AI was 500 times better than this and it wasn't even that great....not to mention the AI pathing sucking up CPU in siege battles

I thought this was supposed to be fixed? I am using BI....I am getting sick of this half-finished piece of software

I think it happens if you tick the box to control army but then look at the enemies army and then click on play. This has happened to me from time to time. I now make sure that the box is still ticked before I press the start button.

No, it's a verified bug (check the BI bugs thread). Whether you tick or untick, the AI takes over your reinforcements and suicides them.

Yup, as Mouzafphaerre says, check this thread for what bugs / errors / glitches etc have been found so far in BI. If you have your own to add to the list, double-check they have not been already posted in the first post, and add them with descriptions and a few screenshots (pictures tell a thousand words )

I have had it happen, but not often. I think it may occur when the reinforcement army is commanded by a general and the main army is commanded by a captain.

It's not happened to me yet. however, i have noticed that if I tick the box, then look at any of the different armies, the box is reticked.

Sometimes it gets bugged sometimes not.
I'm still not sure what exactly triggers the problem.

Yes, this is when it happened to me I think....it doesn't help that the AI always attacks the army led by the Captain either.

The bug is only related to reinforcing armeis led by generals, don`t know if the main force got anything to say. Most of the time the reinforcing armies(led by generals) are controlled by the AI, but sometimes they aren`t.

In 1.2, the AI could control Captain-led armies. In 1.3, it can't, regardless of whether you tick the box or not. Very frustrating, especially when you need reinforcements straightaway on the battlefield.

This means that sometimes, I have to control the captain's army and let the AI control my General's.

Well, it may be that you can't use a lower ranking general to command a higher ranking general.

It's arguable this makes enough sense to be a "feature", not a bug.

Though, if this were the case they ought not to have left the check box to have the AI control the general active.

In any case, i have gotten in the habit of not leaving captain-led armies in places where they can be used to drag general-led armies into battle. The most annoying of these is the case where you have a fully garrisoned city and train a unit that shows up alone outside that city. If that one unit gets attacked you control it while the AI controls your 20 unit army.

Surely it's far too annoying in a gameplay sense to be a "feature"? I mean if they wanted realism like this we'd be tracing supply routes too....doesn't really fit with CA's "we want it to be fun" message.

    Hi everyone

After experiencing this problem a few times I also don't see a consistent reason for it's occurance. I have attacked with a lower ranked general and in one instance had control of both armies but in the other only had control of the attacking lower ranked general. Surely if CA had altered this to improve the game they would have included it in the readme file.

when building up armies I find that the other factions attact the 2-3 units in front of the city. when the battle start the AI want to let the computer control the cities army.
I found that If I uncheck that, I am allowd to play that armie but I can only control a maximum of 20 units, when the total should be 23 or more...

It's intermittent. In my Romano-British (BI) campaign it hit in one of the three battles in a row, all fitting the pattern (reinforcements commanded by a general). Then, it hit in both of the two battles in a row in my Hun (BI) campaign.

It's a real bug and effects RTW 1.3--which is based on the BI executable. So far the bug has been 100% for me when the AI attacks my army without a family member in it...and my other army contains a family member. I never can control the army with the family member when this happens. Right now, I just make sure that it doesn't happen. Definitely a bug.

Many nobles had troubles taking orders from those who were lower-born than themselves, and it's not that unreasonable to see it reflected in the game.

That's no kind of answer. In that case I should still be allowed to choose which leader I should play. It's a bug.

Except they aren't trying to simulate this...and if I'm the noble, why can't I have charge of myself??? Doesn't make any sense.

Let the AI control an army while you are sieging an enemy city is a real pain.

    Sidenote:
But I like to join the siege when an allied fraction is besieging an enemy city. You can observe while the allied AI loose lots of men, while you can slowly break through the walls and make a good battle. When the defender is beaten, make sure you have the biggest army standing on the field and bring a unit into the citys center. In reward you will own it :)

Yeah, but no noble in his right mind would march his troops right next to the towers of an enemy city and let his army get decimated.

Post Re: I untick "Allow AI to control this army"

Think I might have found a working solution to this problem in RTW v1.3 after a few tests. Note that this is when you have at least two generals commanding separate armies, IE one heading the assaulting / defending army, the other general heading the reinforcing army:

    * When the reinforcement check-box appears, uncheck it.

    * Now right-click your opponents army banners to observe what you're up against (if he has multiple armies, study them all).

    * Close the opposition army scrolls.

    * The check-box should now either be unchecked or rechecked.

    * If the check-box is checked, do the following:-
    +Uncheck box
    +Recheck box
    +Uncheck box

    * If the check-box is unchecked, do the following:-
    +Check box
    +Uncheck box
    +Check box
    +Uncheck box

All you are doing is checking / unchecking the check box at least twice, this has appeared to solve the problem for myself at least. Haven't got a copy of BI installed, so haven't tested it on this.

Now when you enter the battlefield and your reinforcements are called upon, you should be given complete control of every unit in the reinforcing army, including the general heading it. You can also have more than one general in both the main army, and also the reinforcing army.

Note that this was done for several consecutive (or over the space of a few) turns, where reinforcements were used in a battle. Let me know if this potential solution works for you.

    [EDIT:]Various screenshots added.
