Thread: Troop Movement

    Default Troop Movement

I have been reading these forums up and down backwards and forwards and last night I spent alt of my time just moving troops around the maps in created battles to just get the hang of it better.

the ALT+ Left click seemed to have no affect on my troops.

The ALT+ Right Click was very good and my troops would change their facing and move to the point or very close to where I clicked.

After setting a formation My troops would not stay in it and move togetherthey would swing kinda sloppy

Also If anyone can help I know this is gonna sound really noob but Im not sure what a phalanx is, althogh it sounds like a formation.

And is there anyway to know how far my archers have to move up before being in range to a target???

Any and all help exsplanations tricks and tips of any kind to assist me in movement of tropps on battle field would be greatly appreciated.

    Nothing is more important than being able to do this well when playing a game or a battle;

Please refer to ONLY ONLY RTW VANILLA not the MTW

I think that was the problem with other posts and why certain things may not have been working

Misslie troops with enemy in range will have their arrow/javelin icon change to green. Ah, a good indication of distance is if you can see a bit of detail of enemy unit it should be in range or nearly.

ALT + double Right click to charge missle troops into hand to hand.

Phalanxes are just mass spear/pike men. They move very slowly unless you change their formation to standard/ non phalanx. If I think I'm going to get out manoeuvred by cavalry I put peltasts or something near the rear of the formation to give the phalanx a chance to wheel about and face them. When manoeuvring, a phalanx is vulneranle to anything.
Phalanx units are best vs cavalry frontally.

Another thing is that light infantry move fast as you would expect. I didn't used to like light infantry until lately discovering various advantages of having of speed.

Gotta go to work. Hope this helps you out a bit.

You can hire Mercenary Hoplites they have phalanx ability. They are often available in Italy as well as Greece, Islands, and Asia Minor.

if you have some money to spare it is often worthwhile sending a general on a ship to greece to pick up some good mercs. cretan archers and hoplites are very handy against gauls.

As you say so yourself, practice is a good way of learning new things and trying out different tactics. Keep going into Custom Battles and playing as (and against) all of the factions in RTW. This will give you an idea of what to expect against different armies and what tactics they use. Even better playing online matches, as the AI in RTW isn't the best around

I want to say thanks for the tips however the thread I started for help with the movement of troops I have done alot of google searches in the forums to find out how to move the troops and half of what I read does not work.

ALT + Left click does not do anything
F1 which used to bring up battle commands does not do anything anymore

ALT + right click does change the unit faceing however i can not tell that is seperate from just moving to a spot.

Any troop movement help or suggestions to assist in moving the units better making life easier understanding how to do flanking better are all welcome posts in fact to be honest if we mnade a good one it would make for a good perm post in your newer forum sections

I read a nice informative post by Annie however half of what I read didnt work I think because she may have been referring to MTW not RTW

Anyway thanks in advance anyone that can help out
