    Default Faction choices?

I realise that there's a faction limit wich means some historical factions unfortunately must be left out. Also I know that it's to late to change the faction list, but I'm still going to ask just out of curiosity.
Why is the kingdom of Epirus not in? I think Pyrhus, who might have defeated and conquered Rome if things had gone different, is reason enough for this faction to be in.
That, combined with the fact that there won't be any Illyrians, would suggest that things are going to get rather quit on the Balkans
For that matter, I can't understand why Casse made it in at the expense of the above factions even though the British tribes never significantly affected history.

Oh, this can of worms again. Alright, let's go. As I understand it, the Illyrians were not exactly centre-stage at this point in history. The EB can answer this better than I can, of course.

The same could be said of the British tribes. Plus, weren't the Illyrians notorious pirates?

I don't think that the Illyrians were united at this time in history, while the casse were. Maybee Epirus will be included, there is still one secret faction. Take a look at the Koinon Hellenon preview thread, I think Pyrhus was mentioned there.

Edit: ive just checked, he's mentioned in the fourth paragraph

Mod starts in 272, which I beleive is after Phyrus' threat to Rome is over.

Casse were a large, organised tribe, the Illyrians were a bunch of leaderless pirates who never attempted serious expansion.

The Romans fought two wars with them (unsurprisingly called the first and second Illyrian war) during wich they were united I believe.
At least they interfered with the "civilized" world. What did the Britons do to except get invaded by the Romans without putting up much of a fight, get abandoned due to lack of interest, and get invaded again? All outside the timeframe of this mod, I might add too.

Our Celtic Experts will know far better, but if understood what they said then the Casse were actually attempting to unite the british tribes and fought many wars for that. If they would have achieved that they would actually have been a really significant Nation. Also don't forget that they had very very much contact with the Gauls.
Still it is also a matter of preference, as you said, not everyone can be included.
Oh btw. Caesar had a much harder time on his british expidition than when he was in Gaul. And i don't think you would agree at excluding the Aedui to put in Illyrians would you ?

A harder time? The way I understould it was that Caesar hugely exaggerated his tales of the Britons, making them look like ferocious, beastlike men while the expedition itself wasn't all that hard. Propaganda at it's finest.

And of course, if it was between the Aedui and the Illyrians it would be the former. But having the entire balkan covered in euleutheroi grey just seems wrong

I think the Aedui had lost most of their professional soldiers during a civil war when the romans invaded. Whilst i believe the britains soldiery would have been pretty much intact at the time of caeser's invasion. Wasn't the invasion made easyer not because of any defficit in the military ability of the britains but rather by takeing advantage of the recent deposition of a british warlord and saying that they had come to restore him to power?

I agree with you statement, it pains me to see any large portion of the map grey, but they have to work with the number of factions that CA set out. Like i said before maybe the mystery faction that is yet to be revealed is Epirus?

Well my "knowledge" about caesars expidition to brittain pretty much only comes from having read the gallic war. But my impression of it was that he faced more resistance than expected and then exxagerated to excuse it.
    Only my Impression though...

    Lightbulb Re: Faction choices?

The Illyrians were not united in the EB time-frame, and putting them in as a faction would be as accurate as addding a "Gaul" faction. The Illyrian wars were AFAIK fought between Macedon and Rome, but because both were occupied the war was fought mainly between tribes supported by one or the other power.

Epirus is probably going to be rebel, as the KH faction description calls Phyrrus a rebel and mentions bribing him. This would be impossible if he was a faction leader. I don't know why they did not include Epirus, but I suppose that Greece already very crowded enough. Apart from Phyrrus, Epirus has never been important, and it is questionable if he could have achieved much.

The Casse, on the other hand came quite close to uniting the Britons, and their merchants travelled as far as Greece.

Personally, I would drop the Casse for the Averni because they appear more interesting to me than the tribal Britons, and because this would create the historical powerbalance that kept the Aedui in check. But this is just my uninformed opionion.

Incidentally, I am afraid the "secret faction" is an illusion. EB dropped Numidia for Baktria, and put the Thracians and Dacians together to make space for a Roman faction. They cannot use any of the original Roman faction slots if they don't want the Senate in their game.

i see, i thought that they were just keeping the last faction a secret, i knew about that reference (i make a link to it earlyer) i thought they might have written it before they decided to scrap thrace. surely there must be something they could do with the roman faction slots, what about makeing the senate a faction in control of rome like in RTR or just use its slot to make an arvernii faction.

There are no more factions. If there were, which I am not confirming, I cannot confirm that the final faction would indeed not be Bartix.

Units have already been discussed. Remember the Bartix preview?

    a. Using the senate for any faction would cause serious problems. I think this has been tried by many mods and it ends in disaster due to hard-coded stuff.

    From the faq:

There is no way to fundamentally change the Senate, so we have removed it.

The faction choices were very hard. Some were obvious, but others less so. Everyone had some personal favorite left out, be it Scythia or Epirus or whatever.
In the end, we choose the ones that contributed most to the historical situation in their area. The Casse may not have contributed much to the Roman sphere, but they did to Briton and the area around it.

I was under the impression that there was still a secret faction. Doesn't Rome simply sit in one of the 3 none senate Roman faction slots?

    Edit:

Now that I think about it there is still a faction slot left. Numidia was dropped for Baktria(sp?) and Thrace was also dropped.
RTR dropped Thrace for Baktria and Britton for Illiria. Meaning Rome doesn't need a new faction slot

Maybe the secret faction is the one of the famous "occultus" sig or maybe the occultus is nothing but only for fans to make threads about "what-is-the-damn-secret-faction-since-they-said-it isn't-mauryans-nabateans-numidians-bartixians-arvernii......

I know you guys won't be dissapointed if we have shown all the factions, right?

Won't the map changes, new factions, historical accuracy, family members' personalities, new victory conditions, roman triumphs, new events, multiple roman reforms, new battle formations, new animations, seasonal game effects, special province captures, unique relationships with independants, and improved gameplay balance all be good enough?

So they're basically unable to use 4 factions slots due to this issue. Wonder if this means that BI would allow the mod to add 4 extra factions?

RTW, 167 BC: Rome expels Greek philosophers after the Lex Fannia law is passed. This bans the effete and nasty Greek practice of 'philosophy' in favour of more manly, properly Roman pursuits that don't involve quite so much thinking.

BI has a whole different set of problems. There are some very serious complications with using BI. It has been discussed but I don't think it will be used until later.

Rome: Total War Mod Finally Completed
Realism team worked for 70 years

    By Alexander the Pretty Good
    Friday, November 17, 2074 11:67AM

Europa Barbarorum, the highly anticipated modification for turn-of-the-century strategy game Rome: Total War, was finally released today. Thousands of downloads have been made as aging fans rushed to acquire the long-sought mod.

Started before the release of Rome: Total War, in 2004, the Europa Barbarorum team was founded to correct the historical inaccuracies rampant in the original game. The seventy years of development were spent digilantly researching and generating game content and code. But the road to success wasn't easy.

"It got a lot harder when Khelven passed away," said team historian Steppe Merc, one of the surviving original members. "We were directionless, and lost several people. Fortunately, Khelven II, Khelven's son, stepped in when he did. That was in the spring of 2047. We released the Open Beta just weeks after that. And now we're here."

The Open Beta release was overshadowed by rioting on the Lunar Colonies and tensions in the Middle East, where Iraq and Syria were in the middle of a border dispute.

More recent efforts to hype up the final release were moderately successful, which equates to a literal miracle. "We are very grateful to the fans who stuck with us," EB member Divinus Arma was quoted saying in an interview. "Ultimately, they made it all possible."

The team has announced plans to port the game to Barbarian Invasion, the acclaimed expansion for Rome: Total War. Khelven II, now leader of the Europa Barbarorum team, had this to say: "There's no telling what we'll do after [releasing the Barbarian Invasion port]. Maybe another realism mod, this time for Mars: Total War. Or a virtual reality simulation of life in the Roman World."

Whatever happens next, the future is bright for those who mod for the past.

They say that it is not Arverni, not Mauryans, not Numidians, not another allied greek faction, not Scythians, not Cushites or some other African people, not Sabaeans or any other Arab nation, but I bet that it is one of those. What else could it be? Personally, I hope that it is Arverni.
