I was wondering if these are controlled by geography in some way, or are they purely random selections from the Notitia Dignitatum? Anyone know?

There is a bit of regional difference.
You may not care about war, but war cares about you!
They are doled out by region. But some regions share the same name.Originally Posted by Trithemius

Thanks for that! I might have to build toplevel barracks everywhere and see what names I get from different locations.Originally Posted by lars573

Now the question comes... Which file contains this? I would love to be able to name other units (which I can in the descr file but that only gives them First Cohort names).
You may not care about war, but war cares about you!
I dug throught the file that has the legion names this afternoon and updated the list with all the names and the settlements they come from.
Kraxis.
The legion names are a provincial attribute. It's contained in the descr_regions.txt file.
The file path is once in your RTW folders bi/data/world/maps/base IIRC. Don't take that as gosple I may be wrong.
