    Default A Veteran Salutes Farewell

This was Lobo, a decorated, retired Military Police Bomb Dog, and the Kukri-family's adopted daily companion these past 12 years.

I've just now returned from the Animal Doc's, where we discovered that cancer had taken hold in his spleen, then spread throughout the rest of his organs. We knew trouble was afoot this past Sunday when he began bumping into walls.

He rests now in the Elysian Fields of Canine Contentment.

May he find, threefold and more, the mercy and loyalty he showed me. He'll be missed.
Be well. Do good. Keep in touch.

Looks like you took good care of him, it's hard to lose such a loyal companion.

    KukriKhan,

Well, at least your dog and my dog can hang out together now.

Very sorry you don't have your buddy around anymore. A terribly sad day when a man carries his best friend somewhere and has to leave without him.

All my best. Have a drink or two.

I was a military police dog handler for almost three years.

I am very sorry for your loss. And thank you for taking care of him over the past 12 years. He obviously didn't cut the mustard in the service to be booted after such short tenure. He would have otherwise been relegated to a miserable life as a training aid or been destroyed. Your adoption was very kind.

Sorry for your loss, Kukri. May he rest in peace.

I went though something similar some nine years ago. Damn the incompetent vet! He never even noticed our dog was ill.

12 years is even enough for a souvenir to get used to the existence..

For a pet like that, it would be hard to accept the absence.. Sharing your grief..

Well our family pet was put down earlier this year after a long struggle... he was going on 17 years old (advantage of being a mongrel).

His first issues was he had an ear infection, which led the vet to find cancer and the dog having his nuts cut off... I told my dad if I that was my doc I would be getting a second opinion... ear infection = no nuts? eeekkk

Anyhow over the next few years he got less fit and eventually his back legs would give out for a half a day or more, he would need help getting into the car.

He was a Kelpie/Lab cross, black with a white chest marking and the kind of dog that was a family pet with a nice temperment. He was kind of scared of the cat though.

I'm sorry to take the focus away from Kukri's excellent hound, but it's for a good reason.

When my beloved Beirut got old and had trouble walking, his back legs would give out as Papy mentioned, the vet prescribed a pill that worked wonders. Some little white pill, I think you give the dog half a pill a day for a few weeks. It's a temporary solution, but at least the dog can walk.

Ask the vet if your old dog is having the same problems.

Especially when the vet takes them to the hospital, and after 1 week of medication, they run away, opening 3 doors and 2 lockers.....

Thanks Beirut... he has already departed, the vets couldn't do anything for him as it was the later stages of cancer... systemic collapse. But he was a very very good dog to have around.
