Thread: Out of Cali and into Texas!

Default Out of Cali and into Texas!

Well, after listening to all of the various posts from the community on what places would be nice to move to, I have decided to move my family to Austin Texas.

I have lived in California for the whole of my natural life and it is time to get the heck out of here.

I am selling my Cali house in the spring, and come late summer, I am buying a nice little 2 story cookie cutter home in a little suburb outside of Austin. The day I step out of the service of my country, I will be making a bee-line for the lone star state.

The city is beautiful. The cost of living is cheap. The air is clean. And I can buy a house for cash after selling my single family home in California.

I just thought I would share this with all of you because I am pretty excited about the whole thing.

    Anybody live in Austin?

I have my grandparents who live in Austin as well as my uncle. I personally live in San Antonio, which is one hour away. I visit Austin often for soccer games as well as relatives. Maybe we'll bump into each other one day?

EDIT: P.S: It's an awsome city. It's parties that are fun, but not out of control and it's like the only majority democratic county(which is awsome). In that way it'll be like cali, eh?

Austin shouldn't really be considered Texas though...

Divinus Arma is not alone. That :whooshing: sound you hear is middle-class and lower-middle-class Californians exiting the Golden State for more tax-friendly, family-friendly, climate-be-damned job-friendly locales.

Pretty soon, we'll consist of movie stars and crack hoes (and a few (hundred thousand) gov't workers, like me, to support them).

Hell, even the illegal immigrants/undocumented workers only spend a week here, on there way to a hassle-free, good-paying guest worker program in British Columbia.

Best of luck selling your Cali home, DA. The housing bubble hasn't burst yet (and probably won't before spring '06).

My worksite is authorized 52 workers...12 (23%) of them moved this year to other states - mostly in the South, where they traded their modest 2 bedroom 1 bath starter Cali tract homes in for: 2-story, 4 bedroom 3 bath w/2 acre yard mansions, and a decent down-payment on their kids' college education.

Those old Cali homes are being bought (in my area) by second generation immigrant extended familes with no-down, no-principal, interest-only 'Adjustable Rate Mortgages', which amount to cheaper-than-rent monthly payments for a year or two (but no equity), betting that their startup business will yield enough that when the whopper balloon payment is due in month 25 they can keep the house, or 'flip' it to another 2nd generation .....guy like them who'll do the same.

Can't blame any of those folks. Sure puts the ka-bosh on any idea of continuous community, tho. I'll miss that.
Be well. Do good. Keep in touch.

    Thanks for the support fellas.

And SFTS, I got married in Bexar County. San Antonio to be specific. I've spent a lot of time on that riverwalk drinking myself to oblivion and eating some killer chow.

One thing I am a little worried about... and I ran into this today doing more research:

    TORNADOES!!!!

And any born-and-raised Californian will probably agree with me in saying that Tornadoes are a major deal breaker!!!! I know it isn't a super-high frequency area like the panhandle, but I need more info.

Anybody know anything about tornadoes in the Austin area?

The wife got so freaked out she just started looking at other states, and started screaming, "IDAHO! IDAHO!"

I just told her, " I know honey, but I love you anyway."

No tornados in Austin at all since I've lived here and that's been for 9 years. You'll love it.

Especially the fact that it's AUSTIN! It's as good as San Antonio!

I moved from So Cal to Dallas seven years ago. Got to love the change (much lower) cost of living. Austin is great - has a very active music scene.

Cube, My wife barely weighs a buck. We can't go anywhere that gets below, say, 20 degrees or so. Snow is fine, but not more than 2 feet a year.
