This thing has just happened and really pissed me off:

Looks like the smart guys put an area ban on Turkey (81). Somebody needs to teach them there are non spammers living there too.

Yeah, it's that part which pisses me off. Happened before. It's not much a problem, I can connect via proxy anytime but *having to* use proxy for ORG's chatroom doesn't sound good.

The problem is, the banned area is the whole of the country. Internet connection is state monopoly here, so whoever connects gets a 81.xxx, whether he's an academician, a gamer, an ordinary folksman, a hacker or a spammer. Alas, the total number of internet users in TR is probably smaller than hackers/lamers/spammers from US.

Mouza, you got the notorious error ? What a coincidence that I cried out this ******* error for days. It comes and goes..

The last time I tried to connect -where it disconnected after succesful semi-connections - I was Glined for a day. Let's see if it works now..

Glined seems to stand for Global ban. I understood that IRC networks are pestered by spambots, spam can be quickly repeating text, but also just a few wrong words (not sure whether that includes F10 jokes).

The network administrator told me they had some problems with spambots from, especially, Turkey. Things being as said, it's a smart thing for a malicious person to hide in a crowd of innocent millions: it will/might make the 'server' think twice before hitting you, as that will also hurt all others.

The 'server' will finally be forced to chose between two evils though. Chosing to IP ban won't stop it of course: the malicious man will just use a different IP and continue the war, while he just won a battle: innocents can't use the network anymore.

The host did IP ban a whole 81.number.x.x range.

You still got trouble LeftEyeNine? It's possible the host only relaxed the IP ban instead of lifting it.

I managed to log in and chat with Uesugi Kenshin for a while this morning. I quit with my own will. There seemed to be no problem.

On the areal ban issue, you are completely right. Any "good" hacker wouldn't attack without hiding behind anonymous proxies anyway; spambots may act differently though.After all, the intruder could have used an 81.xxx IP as a mask (proxy).

I'm zlined, right now.. It would be a healthier check if we could do it synchronously with Mouza in order to see that if this zline stuff has something to do with this end of the connection. 'Cause I often get it.

My dutch guess: there are still banned IP ranges because of Turkish spambots (not necessarily Turkish, it could be any spambot using a Turkish proxy). Mouzafphaerre may have a different range allowing to narrow the banned range down, or his IP is just excluded.

A Turkish IP address was sending spam travel agency adverts to the "contact us" links here and elsewhere on the network. Org (I) got 2-3 of those per day. They suddenly stopped 2 days ago. I wonder if those actions are coincidence, or the result of an IP ban at a level or two above me.

Please do email them. If you get no response, or a negative one, please tell me, and I'll email them as well.

The ETG IRC admins do answer, they are really kind people willing to help.

But this spamming stuff never stops and the ban liftage is generally temporary. It freaks the hell out of me. I gave up.

the chatroom. Banning an entire IP range of a country to prevent spam is the
