I won't even try to pick just three overall favorites--I don't need a headache right now. Instead, I've listed genres, and three favorites from each that come to mind off the top of my head (and as it turns out, a few honorable mentions as well):

    Historical Fiction
    Seven Samurai
    Dances with Wolves
    Gladiator
    * Honorable Mention: Clavell's Shogun Mini-series *
    * Honorable Mention: Kagemusha
    * Honorable Mention: Akira Kurosawa's RAN
    * Honorable Mention: The Mists of Avalon

    Sci Fi
    Bladerunner (Director's Cut)
    Aliens
    John Carpenter's "The Thing"

    Action
La Femme Nikita (original French version)
    Black Rain
    Heat

    Drama
    Ordinary People
    Shine
    Betty Blue
    *Honorable Mention: Joy Luck Club

    Sexy Drama
    9 1/2 Weeks
    Body Heat
    Damage

    Fantasy
Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions)
Legend (Director's Cut, Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack)
Merlin (Sam Neill, Isabella Rossellini, Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, et. al)

    Comedy
    All the Monty Python movies
    A Fish Called Wanda
    Boondock Saints
    * Honorable Mention: Deuce Bigalow

    Just Plain Weird
    The Pillow Book
    Sid and Nancy
The Razor (TV serial from Japan)
    * Honorable (lol) mention: Caligula (unrated version)
    * Honorable Mention: Pink Floyd's "The Wall"
    * Honorable Mention: Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same"

Here's my list in no particular order,

    Jarhead
    The Rock
    Platoon
    Blackhawk Down
    Kingdom of Heaven
    Gladiator
    Fight Club
    Under Seige I
    Judge Dredd
    Demolition Man
    Equilibrium
    Missing in Action I
Rocky I, II, III, and IV
    All the James Bond films
    Khartoum

and finally Notting Hill, which is extremely out of place in this list, but is listed only because I've always believed I would meet the perfect woman in a bookstore.

Do you have self-righteous reasons for that or are you a bookshop keeper ?

I'm not a bookshop keeper, but I'm considering become a librarian when I leave the Marine Corps (which will happen in 4 1/2 years.) There's just something romantic about meeting a woman in a bookstore, it's no surprise one of my teachers told me I'd probably end up marrying an English teacher.

There are movies that have been mentioned that I have totally forgot about but cant resist watching!

I will add the 13th warrior to my list, it is kind of lame but I cant help myself, its just great.

A lot of good films listed here, along with some really debatable ones. Black Rain? Demolition Man? Ladyhawke? Uh, well, I guess it's a personal thing. Some of my faves:

    Samurai Flicks
    Seven Samurai
    Yojimbo
    Ran
    Taboo (Gohatto)
    Sword of Doom (Dai-bosatsu tôge)

    Sci-Fi Flicks
    The Thing (Carpenter version)
    Blade Runner
Mad Max 1 and especially 2
    Alien & Aliens

Period Flicks with Lace and Cufflinks
    White Mischief
    Pride & Prejudice (BBC version)
    Emma (BBC version)
    Howard's End

    War Flicks
    Dr. Strangelove
    Lawrence of Arabia
    Das Boot
    Apocalypse Now
    Patton

    Comedies
    Dr. Strangelove
    Duck Soup
    Sullivan's Travels
    His Girl Friday
    Shaun of the Dead

    Horror/Thriller
    Shaun of the Dead
    Dawn of the Dead (original)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('56 version)
    Evil Dead 2

    Noir Flicks
    The Third Man
    Double Indemnity
    The Night of the Hunter
    M

It goes without saying that all of these lists are incomplete, and I could keep going ... but I'll spare you. I like way too many kinds of films.

Yep indeed, Black Rain is a personal thing. The thread said "favorites" not "best" for once, for which I'm glad. A lot of the movies I listed aren't great movies--I just really like them for one reason or another.

I also like the movie Willow.

But how about this one for you - Monty Pyton and the Holy Grail - it is also one of my favorite movies.

The troll bridge is just to damn much - along with the Killer Rabbit scene. But the biggest crackup for me is "bring out your dead"

Now if you ask my son what is his favorit movie - it would be this movie.

Three is tough. Just for kicks, my top three:

    1. Blackhawk Down
    2. Patton
    3. LOTR Trilogy

    After those three...

    Star Wars (old)
    Blazing Saddles
    Airplane
The Man Who Would be King
    The Odd Couple
    Gladiator
    Ben-Hur
    Office Space
    The Scarlet and the Black

Maybe I'll think of more later...

And I'm hoping that the Asian girl in front of me would turn out to be Lucy Liu where I'm a bodyguard, and she'll knock me off in seconds. And when she's leaving I'll semi-consciously notice that she dropped one of the earrings. I'll shout at her "Hey, Is this yours?" with a bleeding mouth, and Lucy -understanding that I'm not only a great stuntman but also a great candidate for a husband- will turn back and heal my wounds.

Actually I forgot one of my favorites - and it happen to be showing on the late night movie when I got home from work the other day.

Farewell to the King - with Nick Nolte.

I like the shots in it more than any other movie, and I love Leone's story-telling thorugh the whole trilogy.
