CBS/AP) A female teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sex with a 14-year-old student, avoiding prison as part of a plea agreement.

Debra Lafave, 25, whose sensational case made tabloid headlines, will serve three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. She pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

The former Greco Middle School reading teacher apologized during the hearing, saying "I accept full responsibility for my actions."

The boy told investigators the two had sex in a classroom at the Greco school, located in Temple Terrace near Tampa, in her Riverview town house and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove them around Marion County.

The boy told investigators Lafave told him her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed. He said he and Lafave, a newlywed at the time, got to know each other on their way back from a class trip to SeaWorld Orlando in May 2004.

If convicted at trial, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count. The plea agreement also was designed to resolve similar charges pending in Marion County.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman said LaFave also will forever lose her teaching certificate, must register with the state as a sexual predator, may not have any contact with children including the victim, and will not be allowed to profit from the sale of her story or personal appearances.

Prosecutor Michael Sinacore said the young victim's family wanted to get the case over with because of the intense public and media scrutiny.

"We're happy that the victim's family can put this case behind them," he said. "The whole process has been very difficult, and we hope they can now resume their lives."

After Tuesday's hearing, her attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said the plea was "a fair resolution of this case." Asked how she felt afterward, Lafave said "tired."

Fitzgibbons said in July that plea negotiations had broken off because prosecutors insisted on prison time, which he said would be too dangerous for someone as attractive as Lafave. He said then that she planned to plead insanity at trial, claiming emotional stress kept her from knowing right from wrong.

In August, Lafave's ex-husband, Owen Lafave, discussed the situation (video) with co-anchor Julie Chen on The Early Show, along with Dr. Julia Hislop, a clinical psychologist and author of the book "Female Sex Offenders."

Lafave said his ex-wife had never told him why she (allegedly) did it "and that's one of the hardest things that I've had to go through, is that I've never received a reason why."

He said "hindsight is 20-20. I can look back now and see some things that were peculiar about her behavior. But I had no idea anything like this was going on."

Clearly there is a disparity in the justice system between what happens to a woman who has sex with underage boys, and when men get caught doing it with young girls.

Is this justified?

I can't remember the details but to give the gist of another example of this.
A businessman was arrested charged etc for comntempt in an investigation into various shady dealings, he wouldn't answer q's, being evasive etc (Tribesman might know, thought it was Liam Lawlor). Anyway, long story short, it was a white collar crime in an investigation into white collar crime.
After being charged and sententenced he's half-dragged out of court in handcuffs and conveniently displayed for the baying public and media.

Sams court, same gardai court officers on duty, a week later. A woman is tried and convicted of stabbing a man to death. They'd been in the pub, she went back to his place and when she wouldn't put out, he told her to leave, she admitted he wasn't threatening etc etc. She went nuts and amongst other things stabbed him in the groin a half dozen times.
She'd led out uncuffed by two nice petite female gardai, allowed to cover her face so she isn't photgraphed etc.
The reprorter when he was able to track down the senior officer, asked what was the reason for the disparity was told, that she was a woman, end of story.

I still can't believe that she wasn't truelly punished. Then again, this is not really a new phenominom. I remember this sort of thing going on when i was in school. But if it was a male teacher and a female student, then action would be taken. If it was a case like this, there would be a few laughs, maybe the teacher would be moved to another school, that was about as harsh of a penalty there would be.

Sentences for women having sex with underage boys will never be the same as sentences for men having sex with underage girls, because boys cannot really be raped by women, and boys tend to seek sex and enjoy it more than girls.

As ridicolous as it appears to be there are a few thesis out there treating this subject. In short they state that the woman feels this kind of straight rape as an actual violation to their freedom, but the man generally feels less "violated" or even greatful. Seriously is a hard subject, but I'll remain with this thesis, as long as it's straight, because homosexual sex will bring other problems into the picture.

Anyways, the point is that at 14 he is legally incapable of giving a valid consent. The fact that he did consent is irrelevant to the crime, just as it would have been if the gender roles were reversed. (As they easily could be, anyone who thinks there are 14 year old girls who aren't up for hitting on teacher doesn't know much about school).

The difference is that a man would get, what, 5-8 years?

The arguement has nothing to do with rape but I've something to say about that anyway. You could justify higher sentenences for male rapists since it usually involves a much higher level of physical force, ie a raped woman is generally physically harmed, a man, less so, though he still suffers the same mental and emotional trauma.

The point is, all other things being equal, a male teacher who had consensual sex with a 14 year old, would be put away. It's that simple.
