Messages marked as read new

I often have the problem that after reading a thread and returning to the forum, all messages are marked as old. Now this is quite annoying in itself, but now it seems like all messages in the last month or so are marked as new

So have I. It's rather annoying, I have to go through all the last post dates to see if I have read it or not.

I thought it was my cookies that suffered from a disease, but luckily that wasn`t the case.

I spent the last 10 minutes logging in, logging out, deleting my cookies etc. before I saw this thread.

This seems to be affecting a number of people (at least) Does anyone have an idea what could be causing it?

One of the new methods are used now, it's no longer tracked by cookies.

The new methods cause a performance hit on the server, as I have no idea how much, the least intensive one is used now. This causes the glitch you are facing now.

There is an easy way for each user to fix this glitch, but each user has to do it him/herself. Read the new topics in a forum and then use threadtools in a forum to mark a forum read.

It's also possible to use quick links to mark all forums read.

I do that quite often, Tosa Inu sama, but it all gets a mess again afterwards. Usually it's no bigger a deal than a major nuisance but sometimes it annoys when you have to track which thread actually has new posts looking at the date/time and sometimes still failing, seeing your own post in front of you, having been fooled by the false marker.

The "new posts" marking process has been changed for a performance increase in the server. This stuff is not an issue, it is the new way things are.

One thing seems to be that some people still think postmarking is done by cookies: it's not. Old posts are indeed marked as unread. You have to tell the board you read them, see post 11. Each person has to fix for himself first by pushing a button.

I encounter 2 glitches.
-The board index still displays outdated information at times. That is because of another performance tweak: that information is not update real time, but once in a few minutes.
-When I read a topic, post a reply and return to the forum index, then the topic is marked unread because of the post I just made.

Other than this, I'm not aware of problems. Not saying there are no others, but a bit more information is required to make me understand.

This board allows 3 methods yes: the old cookie based and two new logging in the database.

Yes. And apart from the glitches described, it works pretty well for me, I'm surprised that others don't feel the same.

I like the new system. I use a few computers, so it's good for me that the forum stores the "thread read" data in the database rather than a locally stored cookie. Other than the issues Tosa mentions, it seems to work okay as well.

Still, I find this stuff to be annoying. I always end up with pages of topic marked as news while I already read them one or two days ago.

In this new system we have to mark the forum read manually after actually reading it. Fair enough: In the old system it would pretend to understand what you had read without having the faintest idea; in this one it's at least honest.
